Virden – Rodger A. Smith, 67, of Virden, IL passed away at 6:15 P.M. Tuesday, October 23, 2018, at home with his loving family at his side.

Rodger was born November 29, 1950 in Springfield, IL a son to Andrew and Agnes Marie (Babbitt) Smith. Rodger married Linda (Marsaglia) Smith on June 12, 1971.

He is a 1968 graduate of Virden High School. He received a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering from Bradley University in 1973 and was a member of 3 honorary engineering fraternities: Chi Epsilon, Sigma Tau and Tau Beta Pi.  He was a registered Professional Engineer in Illinois.  He began working at the Illinois Department of Transportation after high school and continued until his retirement in December 2004.  During this time, he worked as a Geometric Engineer, Project Engineer, Planning Engineer, Program Development Engineer, received the Engineer of the Year award in 1986 and retired as the Director of Highways.  In 2005, he began work at Hutchison Engineering, a private engineering consulting company based in Jacksonville.

He was an active member of the community, serving on boards and committees over the years, most recently serving as President of the Virden Cemetery Board.  He enjoyed family, friends, golf, and following his grandkids activities.

Surviving Rodger is his wife, Linda Smith of Virden, IL; son, Bradley A. (Sarah) Smith of Auburn, IL; daughter, Diana L. (Christopher) Hutchinson of Springfield, IL; grandchildren, Braydon and Tyler Smith, Ryker and Lyric Hutchinson and several cousins.  Preceding Rodger in death is his parents.

Visitation will be from 4:00 – 8:00 P.M. Friday, October 26, 2018 at the Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home, Virden, IL.  Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, October 27, 2018 at the Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home, Virden, IL with Rev. Mark Doane and Rev. Mary Alice Cunningham officiating.  Memorials may be made to (ISPE) IL Society of Professional Engineers, American Diabetes Association or to Virden First United Methodist Church.  Pallbearers: Lyndell Payne, Bruce Paisley, Gary Gatton, Dennis Gatton, Mike Meier and Jim Burke with Honorary Pallbearers, Jim Marsaglia, Joe Marsaglia, Jeff Marsaglia, Frank Marsaglia, Braydon Smith, Tyler Smith, Ryker Hutchinson and Lyric Hutchinson.  Interment will be in the Virden Cemetery, Virden, IL.  To leave a comment for the family, please visit:

    I had the honor of knowing and working with Rodger during my career with IDOT. Rodger was always able to confront challenging engineering and personnel issues with professional, calm and fair leadership.

  4. Linda and Family, Rodger took my granddaughter on her first boat ride around the lake and gave us a welcomed engineer’s approval when he routinely stopped by to check on our cabin remodel. He will be missed. Our sympathies to all.
