Robert M. Dunn

Robert  M. Dunn

Port Charlotte, FL  – Robert M. Dunn, 91 of Port Charlotte, FL, formerly of Girard, IL, passed away Monday June 10, 2019 at Heritage Health in Carlinville, IL.

Bob was born December 13, 1927 in Athensville, IL, a son of Orville J.  and Velma R. (Claussen) Dunn.  He served in the U.S. Navy just after World War II and when he returned to central Illinois, he opened a chili parlor in Palmyra, IL where he met his wife,  Virginia R. Crum.  They married in 1948 and were very active in the Girard community and Girard Brethren Church until she passed away in 1967.  After attending welding school in the 1950’s, he worked for Charlie Gibbel as a blacksmith until Mr. Gibbel helped him to start his own blacksmith business.  Many of the local farmers will remember the Dunn’s Welding and Repair shop where in Bob’s words “a handshake was always your word”.  During those years, he was also a decorative iron fabricator and made many of the area iron porch railings that are still in use today.  In the late 1960’s, he pursued his automobile passion that began with a broken down Model A Ford that he bought for a few dollars and refurbished when he was just 15 years old.  He partnered with Loveless Pontiac-Cadillac in Carlinville and then went on to become an independent auto dealer specializing in pre-owned vehicles.  He was well known and respected by the area new car dealers.

Bob was a founding member of the Sunset Lake Association and the Sunset Lake Boat and Ski Club which provided his family with many good memories.  He was an avid skier and he and his family were a big part of the annual Sunset Lake Labor Day Ski Shows.  He is immortalized in the Girard Sesquicentennial book with a photo taking a small boat over the ski jump at Sunset Lake. In the early days of Sunset Lake, he built a go-kart track which gave local young people and his own family another fun activity at the lake.  When Bob retired from selling vehicles, he moved to Charlotte County, FL and had many happy years spending time with his Florida family and fishing at “The Shack”, a fish shack located in the Gulf of Mexico and owned by his son, Randy. He was a beloved Father, Grandfather and Great-Grandfather to his family and he loved nothing more than spending time with each new little one that was added to the family. He was a special person and will be missed by his family and many friends.

Bob is survived by his daughters, Melissa R. (Bill) Kribs of Josephville, MO, and Deborah D. Battaglia of South Miami, FL, sons, Randy (Arlinda) Dunn of Punta Gorda, FL, and Rex A. Dunn of Cortez, CO, 8 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, brothers, Darrell “Jack” (Doris) Dunn of Girard, IL, and Carl E. “Gene” (Tina) Dunn of Nilwood, IL and many nieces and nephews. Preceding in death were his wife, Virginia R., his parents, his sister, Virginia Ruth Vandeveer and just recently, a special nephew, Mike Vandeveer.

Cremation rites have been accorded by Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home Girard, IL. Friends are invited to join the family at a graveside service and burial of ashes at 12:00 Noon Saturday June 29, 2019 at Virden Cemetery in Virden, IL.  Shawn Burgess officiating.
