Virden – Carla Sue Otken, 73, passed away at 11:55 P.M. Monday, November 18, 2019 at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, IL with her family at her bedside.

Carla was born in Springfield, IL a daughter to Archibald and Phyllis (Heistad) Virden.  She married Gary Otken on October 30, 1980 in Virden, IL. Carla graduated from Virden High School, Class of 1964 and was a member of Sacred Heart Church.  She worked for the State of Illinois with the Department of Historic Preservation.  As a past time Carla loved to visit the casinos.

Carla is survived by her husband, Gary Otken of Virden, IL; sons, Patrick (Kim) Gremo of Elgin, IL, Christopher (Jennifer) Gremo of McHenry, IL, Scott (Jessica) Gremo of Argenta, IL; daughters, Wendy (Jerry) Peper of Illiopolis, IL, Michele and Stephanie Otken both of Springfield, IL; sister, Marilyn Bliler of Diamond Head, MS and 13 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and 1 niece.  She is preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Thursday, November 21, 2019 at the Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home in Virden, IL.  Funeral Service will be at 10:00 A.M. Friday, November 22, 2019 also at the Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home with the Rev. Virden – Daniel P. McKennedy passed away unexpectedly at 4:37 P.M. Friday, November 15, 2019 at his residence in Virden, IL.

Dan was born in Chicago, IL a son to Clarence P. and Dorothy (Proctor) McKennedy.  Dan married Lana K. Leach on July 6, 1985 in Virden, IL.

Dan served in the U.S. Navy and as was assigned to the U.S.S. Firedrake, AE-14.  He worked for the State of Illinois where he was a Supervisor with the Department of Revenue retiring in 2002 after 35 years of loyal and dedicated service.  Dan loved the outdoors and was an avid photographer.  He loved fishing and boating and was an enthusiast when it came to Drag Racing.  Every Wednesday night Dan could be found with his buddies at the Race Shop.

Surviving Dan is his wife, Lana K. McKennedy of Virden, IL; daughters, Lori (Mike) Koval of St. Louis, MO, Kori (Ron) Evans of Pawnee, IL; step-son, Rich (Cheri) Roper of Carlinville, IL; step-daughter, Carrie (Dennis) Stevenson of Bloomington, IL; 9 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.  Preceding Dan in death are his parents; first wife, Francis (Megginson) McKennedy and a sister, Rosalind Fleming.

Virden – Rick “Long Hair” Lynn Van Huss passed away at 1:49 P.M. Wednesday, November 6, 2019 at his residence in Virden, IL.

Rick was born on November 23, 1953 in Springfield, IL a son to Robert E. Lee & Doris Eileen (Robinson) Van Huss.

Rick loved to be out doors and loved to fish and was a member of a bowling team.  He loved spending time with his family and his grandchildren.  He was an avid Cardinal fan.  He was a dedicated carpenter and he enjoyed his work.  He never met a stranger, was good hearted and would help anyone in need.  He loved the demolition derby.

Surviving Rick is a daughter, Kassy Lynn Van Huss of Auburn, IL; son, Tanner Lee Van Huss of Springfield, IL; brother, Donald Van Huss of Virden, IL; granddaughters, Addelae Montgomery and Annabell Montgomery both of Auburn, IL, Ailiana Kodatt of Auburn, IL, Bailey Van Huss of Springfield, IL and nephew Russell Van Huss of Springfield, IL.  Rick is preceded in death by his parents.

Girard – Doris M. Lomelino, 88 of Carlinville, IL, passed away Sunday November 3, 2019 at Carlinville Nursing and Rehab in Carlinville, IL.

Doris was born May 8, 1931 in Girard, IL, a daughter of Cecil and Edna (Robinson) Post. She was a graduate of Girard High School and married Kenneth F. Lomelino April 15, 1957 in Freeport, IL. Doris worked as a C.N.A. in hospitals and later in-home healthcare. She enjoyed ceramics and porcelain dolls.

Doris is survived by several nieces and nephews including Becky S. Miller of Girard, IL, and Russell L. (Dianna) Miller. Preceding in death was her husband of 57 years Kenneth F. Lomelino and a sister, Violet Miller.

Morrisonville – Evan R. Cain, 64 of Morrisonville, IL formerly of Virden, IL, passed away Tuesday, October 29, 2019 at Generations Rehabilitation in Lincoln IL.

Evan was born January 31, 1955 in Springfield, IL, the son of Russell E. and Evelyn L. (Wrightsman) Cain. He was baptized at the Virden Church of The Brethren and attended Harvel New Life Church in Harvel, IL, where he played the guitar for services. Evan retired as a coal miner from Freeman United Crown II in Virden, IL with over 30 years of mining. He played guitar in several area bands most notably Southern Cross Gospel Group for many years. Evan was a member of Christian Motorcycle Association traveling around the area ministering through music and for 5 years was active in prison music ministry.

He married JoAnn (Hannon) Charles September 12, 1987 in Springfield, IL.

Surviving Evan is his wife, JoAnn Cain of Morrisonville, IL; daughters: Linsey Cain and Carly (fiancé, Michael Boblitt) Hinds both of Chatham, IL and Billie Sue (Duayne) Howell of Manchester, IA; sons: Cory (Kelcie) Cain and Jacey (Stephanie) Cain both of Lake St. Louis, MO, Paul Charles III of Virden, IL and Robert Charles of East Moline, IL; 15 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren; sisters: Brenda (David) McKennedy of Auburn, IL, Arlene (Dale) Rhodes of Marion, IL and Nancy Heriford of Virden, IL, and several nieces and nephews. Preceding in death were his parents and brother-in-law Robert Heriford.

Ann was born August 25, 1947 in Sacramento, CA a daughter of George W. and Dorothy M. (Roberts) Wells. She married John Wamsley in Girard, IL.

Ann is survived by her son, Joe (Ashley) Marr Jr. of Dayton, OH, grandchildren, Joe Marr III, Liam and Charlie Ann Marr, sisters Daisy (Kenneth) Sanders of Girard, IL, Dorothy (Steve) Crist of Virden, IL, and Doris Hinman of Girard, IL, a brother, James (Pam) Wells of Springfield, IL, and several nieces and nephews. Preceding in death were her parents, husband, John Wamsley, sisters, Marjorie Willis, Betty Green and Deborah Spann and a brother, George W. Wells Jr.

Phyllis May Snodgrass

Virden – Phyllis May Snodgrass passed away into the arms of the Lord on October 23, at St. John’s Hospital at the age of 88 surrounded by her family. Phyllis was born in Virden, IL  on August 19, 1931 to Edward and Gladys (Walters) Fitzpatrick. She married Fred Joseph Snodgrass Sr. August 23,1948 and together they raised three children.

Phyllis is survived by her daughters Pam (Peter) Gebhardt of Johns Creek, GA, Linda (Charlie) Fritz of Virden, IL, and son Fred J. (Barb) Snodgrass, Jr. of Taylorville, IL. She has  7 grandchildren, Jodi (Dennis) Jamieson, Nick (Caroline) Gebhardt, E. Michael (Amanda) Smith, Laura Chad Thomas, Steven (Brittany) Snodgrass, and Brian (Jessica) Snodgrass and Josh (Jessica) Fritz.  There are 18 great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews and 2 great great nieces. Preceding in death were her parents, husband Fred Joseph Snodgrass Sr.  and grandson Fred Joseph Snodgrass III.

She was employed in retail services at Myers Brother’s in Springfield, IL, and moved on to work at Town and Country Bank where she started as a teller and retired as an Officer of the bank. While working at Town and Country Bank she was in charge of senior services department organizing trips for seniors and becoming a world traveler.

Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday October 25, 2019 at Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home Virden, IL. Raymond – Frank J. Bertinetti, 94, of Raymond, IL, formerly of Nokomis, IL, passed away Sunday October 20, 2019 at the Illinois Veterans Home in Manteno, IL.

Frank was born February 11, 1925 in Jeiseyville, IL, a son of Dominic and Mary (Cambruzzi) Bertinetti. He was a WWII Navy Bomber Escort pilot stationed on the aircraft carrier USS Franklin during WWII. Frank married Norma Jean “Tootsie” Stivers in 1952 in Nokomis, Il.  She passed away in 1963; he later married Joan Finnefrock in 1973 in Raymond, IL., and she passed away in 1984. Frank worked as a fork lift operator prior to his retirement from Caterpillar Tractor Inc. He worked as a Funeral Director’s Assistant for Hough Funeral Home in Raymond, IL and in his later years worked for Calvert & Ferry Funeral Homes in Auburn, Girard, and Virden, IL .He was a member of St. Pat’s Church in Girard, IL, the Auburn, IL Knights of Columbus, Masonic Lodge of Morrisonville, IL, the  Scottish Rite, Blue Lodge, and the Answar Shrine Temple in Springfield, IL, American Legion Post # 94 in Nokomis, IL, 40 & 8, Fraternal Order of Police, Springfield, IL, and the Illinois Sheriff’s Association.

Frank is survived by his niece, Rebecca DiClemente, nephews, James (Debra) Bertinetti and Dominic Bertinetti III, sister-in-law, Doris Bertinetti, all of Tinley Park, IL, special friend Leona Hacker of Girard, IL, several great nieces and great nephews and cousins. Preceding in death were his parents, wives Norma Jean “Tootsie” Bertinetti and Joan Bertinetti, and a brother, Dominic “Buck” Bertinetti, Jr.

Wilberta J. “Bert” Drake   

Girard – Wilberta J. “Bert” Drake, 97, formerly of Girard, IL and Willard, MO passed away at 1:45 A.M. Thursday, October 17, 2019 at Carlinville Rehabilitation & Health Care Center, Carlinville, IL surrounded by her loving family.

Bert was born June 19, 1922 in Modesto in Macoupin County, IL a daughter to Joseph W. & M. Mabel (Goode) Crump.  She married John “Bill” Drake on September 12, 1941 in St. Charles, MO and celebrated 63 years of marriage.

Bert worked as a clerk at Cherry’s Country Store and also at Virden Department Store. She was a member of Girard Order of Eastern Star where she served as Past Matron of Girard OES and Grand Lecturer Meritus of OES Illinois and Past Grand Officer in 1989.  Bert was an avid reader and rarely seen without a book in her hand.  Bert had many grandchildren and great grandchildren and they all aspired to be taller than her.

Bert is survived by her sons, Bill D. “Skip” (Shirley) Drake of Willard, MO, Sam Drake of AZ; daughters, Karen Wise of Springfield, IL, Kaye (David) Liles of Girard, IL; 6 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.  Preceding her in death are her parents; husband, John “Bill” Drake; son, Barry Drake; granddaughter, Tena Marie Drake; son-in-law, Ted Wise; sisters, Wilma Braun, Mabel Jo Dean and Maxine Aitken and brothers, Glen and Keith Crump.

Virden – Everett A. “Tony” Cruz, 73, of Virden, IL passed away at 9:30 P.M. Wednesday, October 16, 2019 at St. John’s Hospice, Springfield, IL with his loving wife and family at his bedside.

Tony was born March 5, 1946 in Tampa, FL a son to Leo J. and Doris (Gordon) Cruz.  Tony married Karen S. Lovely on August 5, 1967 in Key West, FL.

Tony was a member of the Prairie Temple Assembly of God Church, Virden, IL.  He served in the U.S. Air Force and was a carpenter and contractor.  He was an avid Salt Water Fisherman and loved spending time with his family.

Surviving Tony is his wife, Karen S. Cruz of Virden, IL; son, Anthony J. (Beth) Cruz of Virden, IL; daughter, Tiffany S. (Donnie) Snow of Virden, IL; sisters, Barbara Gibson and Claudia Sanders both of Lakeland, FL; grandchildren, Isaac Cruz, Zachary Snow, Hannah Cruz, Emily Snow, Jacob Cruz and several nieces and nephews.  Preceding Tony in death are his parents and a brother, Jackie Cruz.

Visitation will be from 10:00 A.M. until Noon Monday, October 21, 2019 at the Prairie Temple Assembly of God Church, Virden, IL with the Funeral Service starting immediately following the visitation with Rev.
