Auburn– Betty L. Mullen, 96, of Auburn, IL passed away at 8:38 P.M. Wednesday, February 20, 2019 at Auburn Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Auburn, IL.

Betty was born September 9, 1922 in Virden, IL a daughter of Ralph and Edith Viola (Lester) Thompson.  She was a graduate of Virden High School, class of 1941 and married Dale T. Mullen on July 5, 1941 in St. Charles, MO.

Betty was a member of the First Baptist Church, Virden, IL, and prior to that she was a member of Cherry Hill Baptist Church in Springfield, IL where she taught Sunday School for 20 years. She worked for Sears in Springfield, IL for 20 years in various departments and eventually was the manager of the electrical and lamp Department.  She was a member and past President of the Sears Retiree’s Club and the Virden Senior Citizens, and a member of AARP. On Valentine’s Day 2018 the State Journal Register ran a cover story about Betty and Dale’s love story. Some of her favorite pastimes were dancing with Dale and in their earlier days enjoyed roller skating.

Surviving Betty is her husband of 77 years, Dale T. Mullen of Auburn, IL, daughter Karen (Brian) Browning of Springfield, IL, son, Dale “Tom” (Pam) Mullen of Auburn, IL; 4 grandchildren, twins, Kyle and Matthew Browning, Rachel (Matt) Shonhart and Kenneth (Hillary) Browning, 7 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.  Preceding Betty in death were her parents, daughters, Caroline and Jo Ann Mullen; brothers, Warren and Robert Thompson and 2 infants, Eugene and Francis Thompson and a sister, Helen Johnson.

Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Sunday February 24, 2019 at Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home, Virden, IL.  Funeral Service will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday February 25, 2019 at the funeral home with Rev. Auburn– Dan Alan Peters, 61, of Auburn, IL passed away at 4:15 A.M. Wednesday, February 20, 2019 at Memorial Medical Center, Springfield, Illinois with his loving family at his side.

Dan was born on March 2, 1957 in Springfield, Illinois a son to Jack A. & Ellen I. (Page) Peters.  Dan married Tena M. Becker on August 31, 2013 in Auburn, Illinois.

Dan worked for AMEREN C.I.P.S. in Springfield, Illinois for over 21 years as a mechanic.  In his spare time he loved to ride his Harley and party with his family and friends.

Surviving Dan is his wife, Tena M. Peters of Auburn, Illinois; father, Jack A. (Patty DeFevers) Peters of Virden, Illinois; daughter, Tesha (Casey) Sanson of Auburn, Illinois; step-sons, Tommy Wiser and Abe Wiser both of Waverly, Illinois; step-daughter, Dawn (T.C.) Kincaid of Waverly, Illinois; brothers, Randy (Cheryl) Peters of Murphysboro, Tennessee, Rick (Carol) Peters of Hardy, Arkansas; sister, Teri (Jim Stayton) Peters of Girard, Illinois; 2 grandsons, Hayden and Kendrick Sanson and 9 step- grandchildren. Preceding Dan in death is his mother, Ellen I. Peters.

There will be no visitation, cremation rites have been accorded by the Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home, Virden, Illinois.  A Celebration of Life Gathering will be from 10:00 A.M. to Noon, Saturday March 2, 2019 at the First Presbyterian Church in Virden, Illinois with a Celebration of Life Service starting immediately following the gathering at the church with Rev. Virden– L. Pearl Edwards, 102, of Virden, IL passed away at 7:18 P.M. Monday, February 11, 2019 at Sun rise Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Virden, IL with her loving family at her side.

Pearl was born April 29, 1916 in Loami, IL a daughter to Lee and Stella (Fudge) Harvey.  Pearl married Bill Edwards on February 17, 1938.

Pearl graduated from Auburn High School and was a housewife.  Pearl was a member of the United Methodist Church, Virden, IL.  She was an active member of the Eastern Star, Lalla Rookh Chapter for over 50 years.  She enjoyed playing Pinochle, Bunco and Bingo.

Surviving Pearl is her son, W. Richard (Marilyn) Edwards of Mt. Pulaski, IL; 1 grandson, 5 great grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.  Preceding Pearl in death were her parents, husband, Bill Edwards; 2 brothers and 3 sisters and 1 granddaughter.

Visitation will be from 10:00 -11:00 A.M. Saturday, February 16, 2019 at the Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home in Virden, IL with the Funeral Service starting immediately following the visitation at 11:00 A.M. with Dr. Michael Keppler and Rev. Edinburg – Marilyn J. Oller, 84 of Edinburg, IL passed away Sunday February 3, 2019 at John’s Hospital Springfield, IL.

Marilyn was born December 6,1932 in Taylorville, IL, a daughter of Donald Byford and Alberta Laura (Abel) Allen. She graduated in 1952  from Edinburg High School in Edinburg, IL. Marilyn married Clifford E. Oller December 12, 1952 in Edinburg, IL.  She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Sharpsburg, IL and was an avid horseback rider and lover.

Marilyn is survived by her husband, Clifford E. Oller of Edinburg, IL, a daughter Terri (Steve) Beckham of Edinburg, IL and a son Brian (Tabitha) Oller of Edinburg, IL, 4 grandchildren, Jared (Jill) Beckham, Seth (Danielle) Beckham, Noah and Cambelle Oller, 3 great grandchildren, Taylor, Reese and Chase Beckham, a sister, Wilma (Buddy) Daniels of Edinburg, IL, and several nieces. Preceding in death were her parents, and brothers, Larry and Dwayne Allen.

George R. Trojack, Sr.

Thayer – George R. Trojack, Sr. 81 of Thayer, IL, passed away Sunday February 3, 2019 at his home with his wife, daughter and son by his side.

George was born December 14, 1937 in Springfield, IL, a son of Stephen and Ella (Molen) Trojack. He was a 1956 graduate of Taylorville High School and served in the U.S. Navy from 1956 to 1960. George married Roberta M. “Bobbie” Beavers June 24, 1961 in Kincaid, IL. He was a coal miner retiring from Peabody #10 in Pawnee, IL and was a member of the Thayer United Methodist Church Thayer, IL, United Mine Workers of America, Ark & Anchor Lodge #523 A.F. & A.M. Auburn, IL, the Ansar Shrine in Springfield, IL. and was a volunteer fireman with the Thayer and Virden Fire Protection districts. George was a loving husband, father and grandfather who enjoyed his home, fishing, camping, gardening and sitting on the front porch. He enjoyed his truck “5 MR T” and riding through the countryside with his Boston Terrier observing the crops, looking for deer, fox, coyote and wild turkey.

George is survived by his wife, “Bobbie” Trojack of Thayer, IL, a daughter, Gail M. Thomas of Highland Park, IL, and a son, George R. Trojack Jr. of Chicago, IL, 4 grandchildren, Jesse Trojack, Sebastian, Adri and Bobbie Thomas, sister, Marva Gesell of San Diego, CA and several nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents, infant sister, Mary Trojack and sisters, Linda Slang and Ava Trojack.

GirardAlvin A. Schroll, 86 of Girard, IL passed away Friday February 1, 2019 at Heritage Manor Springfield, IL.

Alvin was born May 6, 1932 in Dorchester, IL, a son of Charles M. and Florence (Holtorf) Schroll. He married Dorothy F. Goeller May 17, 1951 in Waynesville, MO. Alvin served over 22 years in the U.S. Army. Prior to serving in the Army he was a farm hand for Lee Kirby near Chatham, IL. After he retired from the service he worked as a maintenance engineer for FS Growmark in Springfield, IL and was a part time police officer in Southern View, IL.

Alvin is survived by his wife, Dorothy Schroll of Girard, IL, daughters, Susan Linden of Greenville, IL and Debra (Tom) Broms of Savage, MN, a son, Gary L. (Linda) Schroll of Tarpon Springs, FL, 9 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, a sister, Marge Pullian of Nilwood, IL, brothers, Don (Alvina) Schroll of Naples, FL, David (Diane) Schroll of New Port Richey, FL, and Bill Schroll of AZ, and several nieces and nephews. Preceding in death was his parents, twins, Alvin Schroll Jr. and Allen Schroll, and a son Allen Schroll Sr. a great granddaughter, Olivia Schroll and a sister, Doris Dickey.

Robert Eldon Evans

Robert Eldon Evans, 86, of Virden, IL passed away Wednesday, January 23, 2019 at his home.

Bob was born December 29, 1932 in Thayer, a son of James and Anna Mae (Tomasko) Evans.  He graduated from Virden High School, served in the Korean War, and retired from C.I P.S.  He loved spending time with his family and raising Black Angus cattle.

Bob was a member of the American Angus Association, a 4-H leader, served on the Virden Township Board, was a Virden Fire Department Trustee and carried the 1968 Olympic Torch 2 miles in lineman’s boots on Route 66.

Bob is survived by his wife, Joellen (McMullin); 4 children, 8 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

Private family services will be Monday January 28, 2019 at Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home Virden, IL. Rev. Charles Kurfman officiating. Pallbearers: Sons and Grandchildren. Virden – Ervin J. Sepesy, 96 of Virden, IL, passed away Wednesday January 9, 2019 at St. John’s Hospital Springfield, IL.

Ervin was born September 19, 1922 in Virden, IL, a son of George and Julia (Sliva) Sepesy. He graduated from Virden High School in 1940. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Virden, IL, the Virden Knights of Columbus Council 2321and served in the Army during WW II. Ervin married Clara B. Caufield April 23, 1949 in Virden, IL. He worked at the North Mine in Virden for 4 years and then at Fiat-Allis in Springfield, IL, before working as a janitor at the Cathedral of The Immaculate Conception in Springfield for 12 years and then worked for 18 years as a clerk at Horace Mann in Springfield, IL.

Ervin is survived by 2 daughters, Susan M. Stroisch of Virden, IL and Debra M. (David) Miller of Ashland, IL, a son, John E. (Cheryl) Sepesy of Highlands Ranch, CO, several grandchildren, several great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Preceding in death were his parents, wife, Clara B. Sepesy, sisters, an infant, Frances Sepesy and Katherine Cody, brothers, George Sepesy Jr. and Robert Sepesy.

Nilwood– Ernestene “Ernie” Swaringen, 87 of Dandridge, TN formerly of Nilwood, and Auburn IL, passed away Tuesday January 8, 2019 at her sister’s residence in Dandridge, TN.

Ernie was born March 15, 1931 in Dent County, MO a daughter to Ernest and Ruby (Holland) Dawson. She married Martin Gerdanc, August 26, 1950 in Springfield, IL, Martin passed away March 14, 1977. Ernie married Elmer M. Swaringen March 4, 2005 in Eureka Springs, AR and he passed away January 1, 2010. Ernie was a member of the First Christian Church in Virden, IL. She owned and operated Gerdanc’s Junction Café in Auburn, IL for 20 years. Ernie earned an Associate’s Degree in Coal Mining Technology and was the first women coal miner at Freeman Crown II retiring in 1992.

Surviving Ernie is her 2 grandchildren, Martin A. (Sherri) Gerdanc of Girard, IL, and Sarah (Craig) Busch of Divernon, IL, 4 great grandchildren, Andrew and Evelyn Gerdanc of Girard, IL, and  Elsie and Allie Busch of Divernon, IL, sisters, Judy (James) Grieme of Dandridge, TN, Carlene Medlock of Rolla, MO and Sue Dawson of AL and a brother, Ron (Sharon) Dawson of CA, a daughter-in-law Debra ). Virden – Michael E. Cain, 54 of Virden, IL, passed away Tuesday January 8, 2019 at Sharon Health Care Willow South in Peoria, IL.

Mike was born November 30, 1964 in Springfield, IL, a son of Zeldon and Evelyn (Seifert) Cain. He graduated from Virden High School in 1982 and farmed with his father  and his sons on the family farm for many years. Mike was a member of the Macoupin County Farm Bureau and Grace Southern Baptist Church in Virden, IL.

Mike is survived by his mother, Evelyn (Ronald Carney) Cain of Virden, IL, sons, Landon E. (Samantha) Cain of Divernon, IL and Jonathan W. Cain of Auburn, IL, 1 granddaughter, Staley Cain of Divernon, IL, sisters, Christine (George) VanWinkle of Springfield, IL, Beth (Bruce) Garner of Springfield, IL and Barb (Mike Haacke) Whitlow of Chatham, IL, and several nieces and nephews. Preceding in death was his father, Zeldon Cain.
