Washington, DC – Ronald W. Ballinger, 89 of Washington, DC formerly of Virden, IL passed away Monday January 12, 2015 at Washington Hospital Center, Washington, DC.

Ronald was born June 20, 1925 in Springfield, IL a son of Harvey Lee and France C. (Spencer) Ballinger. He was a U.S. Marine veteran serving during WW II as a private First Class and was wounded in action receiving a purple heart. Ronald was a bricklayer for over 50 years in the Farmington, MO area prior to retiring.

Surviving Ronald is his brother, Edward E. (Pat) Ballinger of Girard, IL, a sister who has since passed away, Emma Lee Burris of Springfield, IL, nephews, Randy (Pam) Ballinger and Mike Ballinger both of Virden, IL and several additional nieces, nephews and great nieces and great nephews. Preceding in death were his parents, sister, June Smith and brothers, Russell and Kenneth Ballinger.


Cremation rites were accorded and graveside services of ashes will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday January 30, 2015 at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Girard, IL with Rev. John Huxtable officiating. Emily Grace was born January 1, 2015 in Springfield, IL a daughter of Melissa L. Hansen.

Surviving Emily Grace is her mother, Melissa L. Hansen of Virden, IL, sisters, Naomi M. and Chloe L. Reyes and a brother Isaac M. Hansen all of Virden, IL, grandmother Debra L. Hansen and grandfather Thomas W. Hansen both of Virden, IL.

Virden-Barbara Gene Kiers, 83, of Virden, IL passed away at 10:45 A.M., Friday, January 16, 2015 at her residence.

Barbara was born on May 21, 1931 in Virden, IL a daughter to Frank T. and Fern (Pitchford) Bogart. She later married Francis William Kiers on July 16, 1948 in Virden, IL. Barbara was raised by Frank and Geraldine Tunnel Bogart.

Barbara loved to bowl and was on several local leagues. She also loved to sing and many times she would sing in Bill’s Band or if she was in a crowd and there was music playing she would stand up and sing.

Barbara was a member of the First Christian Church of Virden, IL. She worked for the State of Illinois in the Department of Rehabilitation as a Supervisor. Most importantly she loved to spend time with her grand children and her family.

Surviving Barbara is her son, William F. Kiers of Virden, IL; daughter, Andrea F. (Dennis) Quinn of Litchfield, IL; sisters, Donna Leamon of Tuscon, AZ, Sondra (Kenneth) Yucus of Springfield, IL; 6 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Preceding Barbara in death are her parents, husband, Francis William Kiers and a brother, Sterling Bogart.

Visitation will be from 11:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. Thursday, January 22, 2015 at the Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home, Virden, IL with the Funeral Service starting immediately following the visitation at 1:00 P.M. with Rev. John Huxtable officiating. Pallbearers are Jason Quinn, Justin Quinn, Stacey Holder, Mary Holler, Brandy Kiers and Kenneth Kiers. Memorials may be made to Prairieland Ambulance or to the Virden Rescue Squad. Virden – Dorothy “Minnie” Y. Sexton, 61 of Virden, IL passed away Sunday January 11, 2015 at her home.

Minnie was born June 21, 1953 in Virden, IL a daughter of William and Doris (Bolton) Whitaker. She married Wayne A. Sexton May 1997 in Carlinville, IL. Minnie was a former nurses aid and loved her family.

Surviving Minnie is her husband Wayne A. Sexton of Virden, IL, a step-daughter, Jennifer (companion, Jason Schultz) Sexton of Chatham, IL, two step-sons, Jason (Shannon) Sexton of Chatham, IL and Jeffrey (Amanda) Sexton of Deveron, IL, 6 step-grandchildren, brothers, Joseph (Velma) Bolton, William (Nancy) Whitaker and Charles Whitaker all of Virden, IL and several nieces and nephews. Preceding in death were her parents and a sister LuAnn Rogers.

Virden – Katie E. Ketchum, 66 of Virden, IL passed away Saturday January 10, 2015 at Sunrise Skilled Nursing and Rehab in Virden, IL.

Katie was born July 17, 1948 in Springfield, IL a daughter of Clifford A. and Dorothy I. (Sargent) Ketchum. She attended Grace Southern Baptist Church in Virden, IL and was a CNA and formerly worked at Sunrise Manor in Virden, IL and in home care.

Surviving Katie is her daughter Delisia D. (companion, Larry Atchison) Steele of Sesser, IL, son, Timothy S. (Jackie) Ketchum of Virden, IL, grandchildren, Josh (fiancé, Amanda Smith) Slack, Rachel (companion, Kevin Kloeckner) Slack and Vanessa Ketchum, great grandchildren, Lilly Marie and Lyle Dale Slack and several nieces and nephews. Preceding Katie in death were her parents Clifford and Dorothy Ketchum, her brother, Richard Bolton and sisters, Doris Whitaker and Margaret Branham.

Visitation for Katie will be from Noon to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday Jan. 13, 2015 at Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home, Virden, IL with funeral services at 1:30 p.m. Rev. Terry Turner officiating. Potomac Falls, VA-Emile Levi Jarrard, Jr, 92 of Potomac Falls, Virginia formerly of Virden, IL passed away on Monday, January 5, 2015 at The Johnson Center at Falcons Landing.

Born August 5, 1922, Bond County, Illinois, Mr. Jarrard joined the USMC in 1940 where he served 22 years as a photographer. Once retired, he continued in that field for the government and in the private sector. He loved fishing, hunting, camping, boating, photography and music. He spent many later years in his beloved Boulder City, Nevada, where he enjoyed Lake Meade and the desert. He has gone to join his wife of 60 years, Edna Mae Reynolds Jarrard of Virden, Illinois, along with his parents and brothers and sister and infant daughter.

He is survived by his daughters, Valerie Leonard (husband Robert), and Lynda Krop both of Virginia; his Grandsons John Leonard (wife Jean Marie), Aaron Howe (wife Amber), Nathan Howe, and Brian Howe (wife Alyssa); his Granddaughters Lisa Leonard, Katherine Howe and Leanne Krop; Great Grand Children Cody and Sydney Leonard, Tyler Page-Reynolds, Kegan and Jayden Howe, and Graham Howe, along with other loving family members and friends.

A service will be held Wednesday, January 14, 2015 at 11:00 AM at Calvert and Ferry Funeral Home, 521 N. Springfield Street, Virden, Illinois, followed by a Military Salute at Virden Cemetery, 19220 Cemetery Road, Virden, Illinois. Springfield – Leon D. Hall 65 of Springfield, IL formerly of Auburn, IL passed away Tuesday January 6, 2015 at his residence.

Leon was born November 24, 1949 in Springfield, IL a son of Edward W. and Neoma (Yemm) Hall. He married Joyce A. “JB” Blankenship September 8, 1979 in Springfield, IL. Leon was a member of Broken Chains Church in Springfield, IL. He was a meat cutter for over 20 years in area meat markets and retired from being a truck driver after several years

Surviving Leon is his daughters, Becky L. (Darin) Gleason and Heather N. Hall both of Springfield, IL his father Edward W. Hall of Springfield, IL, and 2 grandchildren. His mother, Neoma Hall and his sister, Tanya Hall, preceded Leon in death.

Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home, Auburn, IL is according cremation rites. Memorial services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday January 10, 2014 at the funeral home.
