Girard – Norma J. Thoron 88 of Girard, IL, passed away Wednesday March 22, 2017 at St. John’s Hospital Springfield, IL.

Norma was born June 20, 1928 in Girard, IL a daughter of Irving and Anna (Rucker) Jennings. She was a 1946 graduate of Carlinville High School. Norma married Joseph J. Thoron Sr. Sept. 14, 1946 in Carlinville, IL. She was a member of Grace Southern Baptist Church Virden, IL and a former member of the First Baptist Church in Girard, IL where she helped with vacation bible school, taught Sunday school and sang in the choir. Norma worked in housekeeping and the laundry for Pleasant Hill Village in Girard, IL for many years.

Surviving are sons, Joseph “John” (Judy) Thoron Jr. of Raymond, IL and Randall Eric Thoron of Girard, IL, daughter, Jeanne E. Miller of Springfield, IL, 9 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, sister, Doris Bouillon of Virden, IL and several nieces and nephews. Preceding in death were her husband, Joseph J. Thoron Sr., brothers, Joseph, James, Paul, Robert, Glen and Curt Jennings.

Visitation will be from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Sunday March 26, 2017 at Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home Girard, IL with funeral services at 10:30 a.m. Monday March 27, 2017 at the funeral home with Mike Mauk officiating. Pallbearers: Chris Thoron, Jason Thoron, Andrew Thoron, Donald Crouse, Allen Sutton and Russell Harden.  Burial will be in Girard Cemetery, Girard, IL. Virden – Charles F. “Charlie” Cody, 68, of Virden, IL formerly of Pawnee & Auburn, IL passed away at 11:40 P.M. Tuesday, March 7, 2017 at his residence.

Charles was born July 19, 1948 in Springfield, IL a son of Coby & Emily (Harlen) Cody. He graduated from Pawnee High School in 1969. Charlie married Milly Ford on December 30, 1983 in Virden, IL, where he was a member of Grace Southern Baptist Church,

Charlie owned and operated Charles Cody Auction in Petersburg, IL, worked at Ace Hardware, 19 years at Big R and 13 years at Menards in Springfield, IL. He was a member of the Eagles Post #437, Springfield, IL.

Surviving Charlie is his wife, Milly Cody of Virden, IL, sons, Peter F. Cody of St. Louis, MO, and David L. (Melissa) Matrisch of Palmyra, MO, daughter, Annie H. (Todd) Emme of Waverly, IL, half-brother, Jim Harlen of Springfield, IL and granddaughters, Alexis Emme and Victoria Matrisch.  He is preceeded in death by his parents, Coby and Emily Cody and by his step-father, Pete Martin,

Cremation rites have been accorded by the Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home, Virden, IL.  A Celebration of Life Gathering will be from 10:00 A.M. to 12:00 Noon, Saturday, March 18, 2017 at the Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home in Virden, IL with a Celebration of Life Service at 12:00 Noon at the funeral home. Virden – Benjamin C. “Ben” Stetson, 57 of Virden, IL passed away Monday February 27, 2017 at St. John’s Hospital Springfield, IL.

Ben was born May 23, 1959 in Hammond, IN a son of Benjamin J. and Margaret (Akin Nehring) Stetson. He graduated from Portage High School in Portage, IN. Ben married Tammy S. Coleman April 26, 1980 in Springfield, IL. He served from 1982 to 1984 in the U.S. Army and was a member of the Sons of the Confederate Veterans Camp #2275 serving as Chaplin.

Surviving is his wife Tammy S. Stetson of Virden, IL, daughter Abigail R. (Jason) Trucks of Virden, IL, sons, Ben R. (Jessica) Stetson of White Hall, IL, Matt L. (Chablis) Stetson of Chatham, IL and Andrew J. (Heather) Stetson of Virden, IL, 6 grandchildren, sisters, Linda (Frank) Stroney of Owensville, MO, and Juanita Stahl of Hobart, IN , brothers, Dan (Marilee) Stetson of Phoenix, AZ and David (Shirley) Deloera of Hammond, IN, sister-in-law Rose Loera of Fruithurst, AL, and several nieces and nephews. Preceding in death were his parents, a granddaughter, Emily Hansen and a brother, Joe Loera.

Margaret N. Royal

Margaret N. Royal, 92, of Girard, IL formerly of Cahokia and Virden, passed away Friday, February 24, 2017, at her residence.  She was born on June 1, 1924, in Newton, Mississippi, the daughter of the late Willis and Virginia (Brantley) Norman.  She married Lyle W. Royal on March 6, 1943, in Pascagoula, Mississippi, and he preceded her in death on August 16, 2013.  Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law: Elaine and Robert Harrell of Poplar Bluff, Missouri, Cecilia and Douglas Pitchford of Girard, four grandchildren and their spouses: Rebecca and Jeff Caldwell of Little Rock, Arkansas, Cynthia and Brandon Shafer of Edmond, Oklahoma, Erick Pitchford (fiancé Christine Bradley) of Girard, Tyler and Janna Pitchford of East Alton, Illinois, ten great grandchildren: Ethan and Avery Caldwell, Corban, Eliana, Jude, and Gabriella Shafer, Lucas Pitchford, Maddy, Meredith, and Ben Pitchford, and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Norman of Lumberton, Texas.

Margaret and Lyle formerly owned and operated Royal Highway Service Station and the Royal Treat in Cahokia.  She retired from Cahokia School District #187 where she was a secretary at Cahokia High School.  Margaret enjoyed traveling, gardening, and reading.  She made her profession of faith in Jesus Christ as a child.  She and Lyle were faithful members of Maplewood Park Baptist Church, Cahokia, and then Grace Southern Baptist Church after they moved to Virden.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her siblings: Katherine Dunagin Steele, Marion Norman, and Sybil Mandle.

In celebration of her life, visitation will be from 9am until time of funeral services at 10:30am on Friday, March 3, 2017, at Grace Southern Baptist Church in Virden with Rev. Brandon Shafer officiating.  Graveside services will be held at 2:30pm on Friday, March 3, 2017, at Valhalla Gardens of Memory in Belleville.

Memorials are suggested to Shriners Hospitals for Children.

Virden – Stanley “Stan” Lomelino, 89 of Dayton, OH formerly of Virden, IL, passed away Friday February 24, 2017 at his residence.

Stan was the eldest son of Russell and Ruth (Bowman) Lomelino, born February 3, 1928 in Modesto, IL. He graduated from Modesto High School in Modesto, IL, he married Betty Lou Garst June 20, 1948 in Girard, IL. Stan served in the U.S. Navy at the end of WW II in California where his interest in drag racing began, watching his first drag race on an abandoned air strip. He was a member of the Virden American Legion Post #386, Virden, IL.  He worked at Allis Chalmers as a welder and became the 3rd generation owner of Stan’s Repair and Service in Virden, IL, former family business, O.W. Bowman & sons. Stan will be remembered for the many hobbies he mastered, hunting, fishing, trapshooting and gardening. He received a Lifetime Achievement Award form the Illinois State Senate in 2005. National signs erected on State Highway 4 will forever lay tribute to his Drag-racing talent and accomplishment in the community he loved.

Surviving Stan is his son, David A. Lomelino of Modesto, IL, daughter-in-laws, Christine Lomelino of Dayton, OH, Patricia Lomelino of Girard, IL, grandchildren Rachel Betty Lomelino and Silas Ross Lomelino both of Dayton, OH, sisters, Mary Ellen (Austin) Hulcher of Fountain Hills, AZ and Betty Elliott of Grand Junction, CO, brother, Robert “Bob” (Shirley) Lomelino of Virden, IL and several nieces and nephews. Preceding in death was his wife, Betty Lou (Garst) Lomelino, son, Daniel Ross Lomelino, brother, Forrest Dean Lomelino and brother-in-law, Robert James Elliott.

Virden – Lowell E. “Pete” White 75 of Virden, IL passed away Wednesday February 22, 2017 at Sunrise Skilled Nursing and Rehab in Virden, IL.

Pete was born November 12, 1941 in Virden, IL a son of Lowell A. and Emma (Sergent) White. He married Carolyn K. Whitley September 8, 1958 in Virden, IL. Pete worked for many years and the State Journal Register in Springfield, IL and was a member of the Printers Union and then worked as a coal miner and was member of the WMWA District 12 Springfield, IL.

Surviving are daughters, Krista White-Hunter of Virden, IL, Nellie White-Allgood of Girard, IL and Missy (Paul Garrett) White-Lake of Thayer, IL and Christina Hotarek of Springfield, IL;  sons, Ed White of Virden, IL, Douglas White of Thayer, IL, Mark (Annette) White of Farmersville, IL, Phillip (Nichole) Gordon-White of Virden, IL, Joseph (Jennifer) Gordon of Springfield, IL and Darrick L. White of Gillespie, IL, several grandchildren and great grandchildren, a brother Fred White of Meredosia, IL, sisters, Lucille White-Stamper of Mesa, AZ, Patricia White of Murphysboro, IL and Brenda Hern of Girard, IL and several nieces and nephews. Preceding in death was his parents, wife Carolyn K. White, brother, Bob Bolton and a sister Clara Hotarek and a son-in-law, Colin Starks.
