Virden-Edith “Edie” Miller, 73, of Virden, IL passed away at 8:50 P.M. Wednesday, June 24, 2015 at Sunrise Manor, Virden, IL.

Edie was born on July 24, 1941 in Brooklyn, New York a daughter to George & Josephine (Testagrose) Mesco.

Edie enjoyed a long run on Springfield’s WMAY, as well as a brief stint at WTAX, as part of “One-Eyed Jack and Eye Team”. With the exception of rare guest appearances, she retired from radio on February 3, 2003.

Surviving Edie is her chosen family: Cookie and Al Sowinski of New York, Donald “One-Eye” Jackson of Springfield, IL, Peter and Gail Passaretti of California, Jessie Bumpus of Virden, IL, Brian Miller of Springfield, IL, Sam Spradlin of Springfield, IL, Computer Dave Matrisch of Auburn, IL, Josh Baietto of Springfield, IL, Arlene Joyce of Florida, Angela Hecke of North Carolina, Shar Dolen of Springfield, IL, Dale Patterson of Springfield, IL. Also her daughter, Rhea Miller, grandson, Steven Miller & granddaughter, Abigail Miller-Nix all from Thayer, IL and her wonderful Schnauzer, Cosmo and a her cat, Grace. Preceding Edith in death were her parents and a daughter, Yevette Miller.

Springfield – Albert M. Becker Jr. of Springfield, IL formerly of Virden, IL passed away Monday June 15, 2015 at Villa Health Care East Sherman, IL.

Albert was born May 25, 1930 in Virden, IL a son to Albert M. and Martha (Albo) Becker Sr. He was a 1948 graduate of Virden High School. He married Ila M. Parker June 8, 1952 in Virden, IL. Albert is a member of the First United Methodist Church Virden, IL. He retired after 35 years as a Journey Lineman with Rural Electric Coop in Auburn, IL. He was the former Assistant Fire Chief for the Virden Fire Protection District in Virden, IL, and former Scout Master for Troop 55.

Albert is survived by his wife of 63 years Ila M. Becker of Springfield, IL, his daughter Kari Lynn (Calvin) Mabus of Springfield, Il and his son Rodney M. (Maryann) Becker of Taylorville, IL, 4 grandsons, 5 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Albert was preceded in death by his parents, sister Helen Seebach and brothers James and Robert Becker.

Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday June 19, 2015 at the Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home Virden, IL with funeral services at 10:30 a.m. Saturday June 20, 2015 at the funeral home. Cremation rites will be accorded following services with burial of ashes at a later date. Officiating will be Rev. Mary Alice Cunningham and Pastor Terry Dowds. Springfield – Dorothy Littlejohn Stupar 97 of Springfield, IL passed away Monday June 15, 2015 at Lewis Memorial Christian Village Springfield, IL.

 

Dorothy was born October 13, 1917 in Thayer, IL, a daughter to Joseph T. and Florence G. (Wood) Sowerby. She graduated from Virden High School. She married George Littlejohn October 6, 1945 in Thayer, IL and following his death married Joseph Stupar June 8, 1981. She was a member of Thayer United Methodist Church, Thayer, IL. She worked for Sangamo Electric and retired in 1981 from Wrightsman-Musso Real Estate and Insurance. Dorothy was a Girl Scout Leader and volunteered with the Rainbow Girls. She enjoyed cooking, dancing, golfing and being with family, friends and her granddog Bonnie.

 

Dorothy is survived by her daughter Judy Carmody of Springfield, IL, two children by marriage, Mark Stupar and Annelisa (Dr. Martin) Cleary of Apple River, IL. Grandchildren by marriage are Colin, Daniel and Caitlin Cleary, Brenda (Jeff) Price and Jennifer (Chet) Bartlett. Three great grandchildren by marriage are Bryan Bearden, Alex Luttrell and Jacob Bartlett. Dorothy was also known as Grandma to Judy’s god-children Dawn (Greg) Stirrett, Karsyn, Reyse and Cade; Tad Baird, Grant and Brady; and Brittney Reidy, Madisyn, Brylee and Fynleigh. In addition a niece Linda Mae Miller and a cousin Henrietta Talkington also survive. Her parents, husbands George Littlejohn and Joseph Stupar, and a brother George Sowerby preceded Dorothy in death

 

Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. Thursday June 18, 2015 at Thayer United Methodist Church, Thayer, IL; with a Celebration of Life Service at 11:00 a.m. Rev. William Woodruff officiating. Pallbearers: Tad Baird, Brent Baird, Tom Schafroth, Jeff Price, Chet Bartlett & Bryan Bearden. Burial will be in Auburn Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Thayer United Methodist Church. Girard – Larry J. Herron 73 of Girard, IL formerly of Auburn, IL passed away Sunday June 14, 2015 at Memorial Medical Center Springfield, IL.

Larry was born April 25, 1942 in Springfield, IL the son of Joseph A. and Beulah I. (Miller) Herron. He married Pauline M. Conder December 28, 1963 in Virden, IL. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Church in Girard, IL. Larry was a 1960 graduate of Auburn High School and attended Southern Illinois University. He was a graduate of Graduate School of Banking, Illinois Bankers School, Illinois Bankers Trust School, and Illinois Agriculture Lending School. Larry worked for the Illinois National Bank of Springfield, State Bank of Girard where he was Vice President, the State Bank of Virden and First National Bank of Raymond as V.P. of operations and branch manager. Larry retired in March 2012 after 50 years in banking. Larry enjoyed fishing, woodworking, gardening and spending quality time with his wife, children and grandchildren.

Surviving Larry is his wife of 51 years Pauline M. Herron of Girard, IL, daughters, Melissa A. (Glen) Griffin of Girard, IL, Michelle L. (William) Severino of Springfield, IL, Melanie J. (Todd) Yancey of Chatham, IL and Marla S. Herron of Springfield, IL, a son Matthew D. (Susan Wallace) Herron of Chatham, IL, Sisters, Joanne Willoughby of Virden, IL and Joyce A. (Ron) Harp of Auburn, IL, 8 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday June 18, 2015 at Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home Virden, IL. There will be a prayer service prior to visitation at 4:00 p.m. Funeral mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Church Virden, IL with Father James Palakudy officiating. Virden-Edgar L. Smith, 87, of Virden, IL passed away at 9:18 A.M. Thursday, June 11, 2015 at Pleasant Hill Village, Girard, IL surrounded by his loving family.

Edgar was born September 14, 1927 in Girard, IL a son to Clayton and Mae Gertrude (Pierce) Smith. He married Edith I Reynolds on April 10, 1948 in Virden, IL.

Edgar served in the Merchant Marine and the U.S. Army during WW II. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Virden, IL for over 58 years. He was also a Past Master and member of Virden Masonic Lodge #161 A. F. & A. M.; Past Commander with the Knights Templar of Litchfield, IL; a member of Springfield Commandary in Springfield, IL; holds KYCH Award; a member of the Virden American Legion Post #386, Virden, IL. Edgar retired in 1989 from the State of Illinois Department of Agriculture where he was a meat inspector and after retiring owned North End Greenhouse in Virden, IL and formerly owned and operated Girard Packing Co. from 1960 – 1969.

Surviving Edgar is his wife, Edith I. (Reynolds) Smith of Virden, IL; son, David (Mary Jo) Smith of Oklahoma City, OK; daughters, Susan (Robert) McMahan of Thayer, IL, Sherry (Meda Rives) Smith of Normal, IL; Sister, Barbara Jean Matthews of Olathe, KS; daughter-in-law, Kim Smith of Concord, NC; 6 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild and several nieces & nephews. Preceding Edgar in death are his parents a son, Danny Keith Smith and brothers Delbert and Norman Smith.

Visitation will be from 4:00 – 7:00 P.M. Monday, June 15, 2015 at the Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home, Virden, IL with a Masonic Service at 7:00 p.m. Funeral service will be held at 1:00 P.M. Virden-Dorothy J. Berry, 98, of Virden, IL, passed away Saturday, June 6, 2015, at Sunrise Skilled Nursing and Rehab in Virden, IL.

Dorothy was born March 17, 1917, in Pawnee, IL, the daughter of Everett E. and Mabel Brantley Smith. She graduated from Virden High School in 1935, and would have celebrated her 80th class reunion this summer. After high school Dorothy attended Business College in Springfield, IL, and married Dr. Charles Sterling Berry on December 22, 1940, in Virden, IL. She worked with her husband in his medical office and later worked for the State of IL, retiring as a supervisor with the Department of Public Aid.

Dorothy was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church in Virden, and a 70-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star Palmyra Chapter, Palmyra, IL.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Dr. Charles S. Berry, and brothers, Everett E. Smith, Jr., and Vernon Smith.

She is survived by her daughter, Marsha McKennedy of South Riding, VA; 5 grandchildren, Heath McKennedy of Centreville, VA, Heather Moore of Eden Prairie, MN, Brendan McKennedy currently in South Korea, Shea McKennedy of Plantation, FL, and Carrie Parrella of Groton, CT; 8 great-grandchildren, Luke and Rachel McKennedy, Brittany, Mark, Ashley and McKenzie Moore, and Emma and Rebecca Parrella; 1 niece, 9 nephews and several great nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, June 13, 2015, at the Virden Cemetery, Virden, IL, with Chaplin Terry Link officiating;  pallbearers:  Heath McKennedy, Heather Moore, Carrie Parrella, Greg Smith, Jeff Smith & Frank McKennedy.  There will be a Memorial Service/Celebration of Life at a later time. Virden – Frankie Jay McIntire, 70 of Virden, IL formerly of Palmyra, IL passed away Sunday June 7, 2015 at Memorial Medical Center, Springfield, IL.

Frankie was born July 16, 1944 in Pittsfield, IL, a son of Arthur and Fannie J. (Sutton) McIntire. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of the U.M.W.A. Union # 1969. Frankie worked as a coal miner at Crown II for Freeman United Coal Company. He married Betty L. Mitts December 29, 1972 in Louisiana, MO.

Surviving Frankie is his wife Betty L. McIntire of Virden, IL, daughter Amanda L. McIntire of Benld, IL, sons, Donald J. (Stephanie) McIntire of Fort Yukon, AK and Anthony S. (Jessica) McIntire of Gillespie, IL, 6 grandchildren, sisters, Peggy McMeans of Jacksonville, IL and Sue Etta (Steve) Huffines of Glasgow, KY and several nieces and nephews. Frankie was preceded by his parents, a granddaughter Madison Carter Claire McIntire and brothers Chester E. and Jeffery J. McIntire.
