Virden – Vernon L. Smith 93 of Virden, IL passed away Tuesday July 15, 2014 at Pleasant Hill Village, Girard, IL.

Vern was born March 27, 1921 in Virden, IL a son of Everett E. and Mabel (Brantley) Smith. He was a 1939 graduate of Virden High School and served in the U.S. Army during WW II in the South Pacific. He married Ellen L. Schroder on April 17, 1942 in Carlinville, IL. Vern owned and operated Smith-Brown Insurance Agency in Virden, IL for many years. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Virden the Virden American Legion Post # 386, the Virden Masonic Lodge # 161 A.F. & A.M., served on the Virden City Council, the Virden cemetery board and was an avid Cardinal fan.

Surviving Vern is his sons Roger L. (Yvonne) Smith of Broomfield, CO and Gregory L. (Sharon) Smith of Springfield, IL, six grandchildren, several great grandchildren, a sister Dorothy Berry of Virden, IL and several nieces and nephews. Preceding in death was his wife Ellen Smith and his brother Everett E. Smith Jr.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday July 18, 2014 at Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home, Virden, IL with funeral services at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Rev. Mary Alice Cunningham officiating.   Pallbearers:  Russell Mortimer, Marvin Wrightsman, Bob Dodd, Bill Dodd, Don Clark and Joe Hendricks.  Memorials may be made to Alzheimer’s Foundation. VIRDENWilliam H. “Shammy” Whalen, 77 of Thayer, IL passed away Wednesday July 2, 2014 at Memorial Medical Center, Springfield, IL.

Shammy was born Sept. 18, 1936 in Thayer, IL a son of William and Madeline (Heinish) Whalen. He married Sherry L. Short April 13, 1968 in Virden, IL. He was a U.S. veteran and retired after 30 years working out of Laborers Union Local # 477, Springfield, IL. After retirement he owned and operated Daltyn Trucking for many years.

Surviving Shammy are his sons, Scott (fiancé: Stacie McDuffee) Whalen of Thayer, IL, Shawn (Monica) Whalen, Virden, IL and Shane (companion: Stephanie Seabolt) Whalen of Thayer, IL; 4 grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Preceding Shammy in death were his parents, wife Sherry L. Whalen, infant daughter, Shannon Whalen, sisters Wilma Evers and Beatrice Grigsby.

Celebration of Life Gathering will be from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday July 10, 2014 at Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home, Virden, IL. CARLINVILLE – Eleanor A. Cox, 76, of Carlinville, IL formerly of Virden, IL, passed away at 3:15 P.M. Sunday, June 29, 2014 at Heritage Health Care in Carlinville, IL.

Eleanor was born on February 5, 1938 in Hillsboro, IN a daughter of Edward and Mabel (Derringer) Brown. She married Rev. Harold D. Cox Sept. 1, 1956 in Hillsboro, IN. Eleanor was a member of the Carlinville Church of the Nazarene in Carlinville, IL.

Surviving Eleanor is a son, David E. (Dawn) Cox of Virden, IL; daughter, Jane A. (Rev. Norlyn) Crandall of Fairfield, IL, 3 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild, a sister Rosalie Neal of Crawfordsville, IN and several nieces and nephews. Preceding in death was her husband, Rev. Harold D. Cox and a nephew, Charles David Neal.

Virden– Mary Lou “Blue” Lewis, 76 of Virden, IL passed away at 9:00 p.m. Friday June 20, 2014 at her residence.

Mary Lou was born May 1, 1938 in Virden, IL a daughter of Walter and Alice (Ickas) Beckham. She married Elzie A. Lewis and was a member of Grace Southern Baptist Church, Virden, IL.

Surviving Mary Lou is her daughter, Ida Caufield of Virden, IL, sons, George Lewis of Springfield, IL, John (Vicki) Lewis, Scott (Angie) Lewis and Michael (Jaime) Lewis all of Virden, IL, 14 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Preceding Mary Lou was her husband Elzie Lewis, daughter, Ina P. Kahl, brother, Walter Beckham Jr. and sister, Alice Fay Lewis.

Carlinville-Rose T. Hardin, 97, of Carlinville, IL passed away at 3:35 A.M. Sunday, June 15, 2014 at Carlinville Area Hospital, Carlinville, IL.

Rose was born August 27, 1916 in Cherry, IL a daughter to Steve & Louise (Liborio) Antone.  She grew up and was raised in Standard City, IL and attended school there.  She later married Oscar C. Hardin on May 1, 1946 in Carlinville, IL.

Rose worked at her family business in Standard City and later became owner and operator of the business.  She also worked for the Carlinville Glove factory as a seamstress where she made many friends.  Rose was an avid reader and loved to travel with her many friends.  She was a homemaker and a member of St. Mary’s and St. Joseph Church, Carlinville, IL.

Surviving Rose is her niece, Donna (Don) Sanson of Carlinville, IL, Kay (David) Niendorf of Howell, MI; nephews, John Brunetto of Monrovia, CA, Gary (Susan) Kuntzman of Oxford, MI, David (Linda) Kuntzman of Rancho Palos Verdes, CA, & Doug (Barb) Hardin of Girard, IL.  Preceding Rose in death are her parents; husband, Oscar C. Hardin; daughter, Linda & (son-in-law) Stewart Mayfield; brother, Albert Marzetta and sister, Mary Brunetto.

Visitation will be from 2:00 – 3:00 P.M. Wednesday, June 18, 2014 at the Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home in Girard, IL.  Funeral service will immediately follow the visitation starting at 3:00 P.M. with the Rev. Angel Sierra officiating. Lynn was born on August 31, 1934 in Huntington, West Virginia a son to Charles B. & Jeanette (Shriver) Lake.  Lynn was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Virden, IL and was a life long resident of Virden.

Lynn is survived by his brother, Gene H. (Wanda J.) Lake of Virden, IL; 1 niece, 1 nephew, 2 grand nephews, 3 great grand nieces and 1 great grand nephew.  Preceding Lynn in death are his parents.

A private family visitation will be held from 10:00 – 10:40 A.M. Saturday, June 7, 2014 at the Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home in Virden, IL.  A graveside service will be held at 11:00 A.M. immediately following the visitation with the Rev.
