Carlinville, IL– Edward E. Spitznagel, 59, of Thayer, IL, passed away at 12;22 P.M. Friday, July 31, 2015 at Carlinville Rehab and Health Care Center, Carlinville, IL.

Ed was born in Springfield, IL a son to Joseph H. and Delores (Watkins) Spitznagel. Ed attended and graduated from Auburn High School. He worked for the book bindery in Virden, IL and also did janitorial work in Springfield, IL. Ed loved to be outside and was always working in or around the house. Ed was very social and walked almost everywhere he went.

Surviving Edward is his mother, Delores M. Spitznagel of Auburn, IL; son, Mathew Spitznagel of Paducah KY; daughter, Tammy Kmett of Springfield, IL; brothers, Bob Spitznagel of Taylor Springs, IL, Don (Evon) Spitznagel of Springfield, IL; sister, Brenda Wylder of Auburn, IL; grandson, Jeremiah S. Spitznagel and several nieces and nephews. Ed is preceded in death by his father.

Montgomery, AL- Donna Nerone Dean, 73 of Montgomery, AL formerly of Virden, IL passed away Saturday July 18, 2015 at the home of her daughter.

Donna was born March 1, 1942 in Springfield, IL a daughter to Bill and Nellie Nerone. She was a 1960 graduate of Virden High School.

Surviving Donna is her daughter Lynnette Banks and Krissy (Chris) White of Montgomery, AL, several grandchildren and great grandchildren, her brother Bill (Carole) Nerone of Springfield, IL and her sister, Sue Ann (Cole) Langley of Virden, IL and several nieces and nephews. Her parents, granddaughter Jessica White and a brother Jim Nerone preceded her in death.

Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to Noon Saturday July 25, 2015 at Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home, Virden, IL with funeral services at Noon at the funeral home. Rev. Julie was born April 1, 1964 in Springfield, IL a daughter to Victor Edmund and Hazel Lucille (Schroeder) Schott. Julie was a caregiver for her mother in her home..

Julie is survived by her daughters, Keri Sharp of Morrisonville, IL and Kimberly (fiancé; Mike Lair) Schott of Girard, IL mother Hazel Lucille Schott of Girard, IL brother, Rodney (Samantha) Schott of Girard, IL sisters, Vicki Schott of Girard, IL and Sally Miller of Ashland, IL, 4 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Preceding Julie in death were her father Victor Edmund Schott and her brother Roger Lee Schott.

Virden, IL– Arthur Henry Ehrat, 90, of Virden, IL passed away at 12:25 P.M. Thursday, July 9, 2015 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, IL surrounded by his loving wife and family.

Arthur was born December 20, 1924 in Shobonier, IL a son to William and Sophia (Schmid) Ehrat. He later married Mary Mardell Worth on June 27, 1954 in Virden, IL.

Arthur was the manager of Farmer’s Elevator for many years and relished conversing with all the farmers and employees. He was an inventor and extremely proud of his patent on the Break-A-Way basketball rim of which the prototype is in the Smithsonian Institution and there is a display of the rim in the Basketball Hall of Fame. In 2011, Arthur was inducted into the Illinois Basketball Hall of Fame. After retirement, he was extremely active as a volunteer for 17 years for Memorial Medical Center as a Red Coat and for 5 years at the Abraham Lincoln Museum. He took joy in fishing and golfing which included a proud moment of a hole-in-one in 2013 at Oak Leaf Country Club. Art was a long time member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Girard and served many roles in leadership within the church. He served in the U.S Army in World War II stationed in the Philippines with a job as a medic in a maternity ward.

Surviving Arthur is his wife, Mary Mardell Ehrat; daughters, Rose Anne (David) Edwards of Nicholasville, KY, Jo Ellen (Jay) Carroll of Geneva, IL, Sharon Ehrat (August) Mrozowski of Chatham, IL, Jane Marie (Charles) Rushford of Hannibal, MO; brother Walter (Shirley) Ehrat; sisters, Dorothea Albright, Grace Albrecht and Berniece McCoy; sister-in-law Shirley Worth of Virden, IL, 9 grandchildren, Jacob and Josh Edwards; Haley, James and Dylan Carroll; Alena and Deana Mrozowski; Jessie and Clayton Rushford; 2 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding in death were his parents, daughter Linda Ehrat, sister Ruth Pontious Ruprecht and brother-in-laws; Danny Worth, Victor Albright, Hilmer Albrecht, Bob McCoy and Aubrey Pontious. Pall Bearers: Jacob and Joshua Edwards, James and Dylan Carroll, Clayton Rushford, Todd Hasara.

Visitation will be from 2:00- 7:00 P.M. Sunday, July 12, 2015 at the Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home in Virden, IL. Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 A.M. Monday, July 13, 2015 at the Trinity Lutheran Church, Girard, IL with the Pastor Keith GeRue and Pastor Robert Gray officiating. Organist will be Cyndy Wilson. Janet was born on May 9, 1930 in Scottville, IL a daughter to Ralph and Mary Inez (Sims) Fanning. She later married Melvin L. Hays in Carlinville, IL.

Janet was a member of Macoupin County Historical Society, Carlinville, IL and a Former 4 H leader. She was a member and a Sunday School Teacher at the Nilwood Baptist Church, Nilwood, IL.

Surviving Janet is her son; Darrell M. (Cheri) Hays of Girard, IL; daughters, Donna J. (Lowell) McNeely of Modesto, IL, Diane J. (James) Tisckos of Springfield, IL; 5 grandchildren, 5 step-grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, 9 step- great grandchildren and several nieces & nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Melvin L. Hays; daughter, Dena Marie Hays; brothers Robert & Coy Fanning and great grandson, Cooper Mueller.

Virden-Edith “Edie” Miller, 73, of Virden, IL passed away at 8:50 P.M. Wednesday, June 24, 2015 at Sunrise Manor, Virden, IL.

Edie was born on July 24, 1941 in Brooklyn, New York a daughter to George & Josephine (Testagrose) Mesco.

Edie enjoyed a long run on Springfield’s WMAY, as well as a brief stint at WTAX, as part of “One-Eyed Jack and Eye Team”. With the exception of rare guest appearances, she retired from radio on February 3, 2003.

Also her daughter, Rhea Miller, grandson, Steven Miller & granddaughter, Abigail Miller-Nix all from Thayer, IL and her wonderful Schnauzer, Cosmo and a her cat, Grace. Springfield – Albert M. Becker Jr. of Springfield, IL formerly of Virden, IL passed away Monday June 15, 2015 at Villa Health Care East Sherman, IL.

Albert was born May 25, 1930 in Virden, IL a son to Albert M. and Martha (Albo) Becker Sr. He was a 1948 graduate of Virden High School. He married Ila M. Parker June 8, 1952 in Virden, IL. Albert is a member of the First United Methodist Church Virden, IL. He retired after 35 years as a Journey Lineman with Rural Electric Coop in Auburn, IL. He was the former Assistant Fire Chief for the Virden Fire Protection District in Virden, IL, and former Scout Master for Troop 55.

Albert is survived by his wife of 63 years Ila M. Becker of Springfield, IL, his daughter Kari Lynn (Calvin) Mabus of Springfield, Il and his son Rodney M. (Maryann) Becker of Taylorville, IL, 4 grandsons, 5 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Albert was preceded in death by his parents, sister Helen Seebach and brothers James and Robert Becker.

Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday June 19, 2015 at the Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home Virden, IL with funeral services at 10:30 a.m. Saturday June 20, 2015 at the funeral home.
