Springfield – James O. “Jim” Squires 55 of Springfield, IL passed away at his home Wednesday June 22, 2016 in Springfield, IL.

Jim was born May 4, 1961 in Des Moines, IA a son to June Bucks. He attended Howe Military School in Howe, IN and was an avid Chicago White Sox and Chicago Bears fan and enjoyed fishing, golfing, being grandpa “papa Jim” and loved pens. Jim worked as a food production manager at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, IL.

Surviving Jim is his daughters, Joie M. Squires of Thayer, IL and Jessica L. (Brandon) Leonard of Middletown, IL, 3 grandchildren, Jayleigh, Bryan and Greyson, two brothers, Robert (Donna) Squires and Thomas Squires both of Springfield, IL and several nieces and nephews. Preceding in death was Jim’s mother.

Visitation will be from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Saturday June 25, 2016 at the Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home, Virden, IL with services at 3:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Rev. John Huxtable officiating. Virden – Vernon J. “Snuffy” Wilson, 85 of Virden, IL passed away Sunday June 19, 2016 at Memorial Medical Center Springfield, IL.

Snuffy was born Nov. 4, 1930 in Litchfield, IL a son to Luther I. and Spray (Pease) Wilson. He married Gloria V. Castleman June 28, 1952 in Litchfield, IL. Snuffy retired from Fiat-Allis in Springfield, IL after 35 years and he formerly work at Virden Cemetery for 14 years. He served with the U. S. Army in Germany and then with the IL National Guard. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Virden, IL and the Elmer E. Vance American Legion Post #386 in Virden, IL. Snuffy was a loving father, grandfather and great grandfather and a avid Cardinal fan and gardener. He was also an old time country and bluegrass music fan.

Surviving are his sons, Vernon E. “Gene” (Brenda) Wilson of Springfield, IL, Gary D. Wilson of Virden, IL, Greg L. (Christi) Wilson of Riverton, IL and Gerald A. (Tracy) Wilson of Berlin, IL, 7 grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild, a sister, Alice (Ray) Schwab of Litchfield, IL, brothers Jimmy L. (Ruthann) Wilson of Taylorville, IL and Paul Dean (Shirley) Wilson of Litchfield, IL and several nieces and nephews. Preceding in death were his wife Gloria, brothers, Elmer, Kenneth, Leroy and Richard Wilson and sisters, Opal Hefley and Alberta Stewart.

Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday June 22, 2016 at Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home in Virden, IL with funeral services at 11:00 a.m. Thursday June 23, 2016 at the funeral home. Rev. Edith was born August 13, 1921 in Girard, IL a daughter to Ernest Gipson and Bertha I. (Miller) Hayes. She married Bernard A. Roderick on October 15, 1952 in Girard, IL. Edith formerly attended the First Christian church in Virden, IL and was a homemaker.

Surviving Edith is her daughters, Barbara I. (Myron) Lubin of Scottsdale, AZ, Adrienne K. (Henry) Sparks of Radcliff, KY, Rebecca Lynn Roderick of Girard, IL and Jean Marie (life partner Larry Graves) Strassner of Pekin, IL, sons, Kevin B. Roderick of Bay View, WI and Rev. Richard M. (Cindy) Roderick of Cridersville, OH, and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild and several nieces and nephews. Preceding in death were her husband, sons, David A. Gardner and Joseph Gardner;  brother Clarence Hayes and 4 sisters;  Elsie, Laura, Alma & Velma.

Virden – Dennis P. Carrigan, 66 of Virden, IL passed away Monday June 13, 2016 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Dennis was born June 28, 1949 in Carlinville, IL. A son to Paul and Lavetta (Jones) Carrigan. He was a 1967 graduate of Virden High School and served two tours in Vietnam with the U.S. Marines and was awarded a Purple Heart. Dennis worked for many years for Bumpus Disposal in Thayer, IL. He married Glenda M. Kelly-Barnes May 7, 2016 in Virden, IL.

Surviving Dennis is his wife Glenda Carrigan of Virden, IL, daughters Montana D. Carrigan at home, Terry K. Vandeberg of OH and Michelle of FL, step-sons, Robert Ian King of KY and Vincent Eugene Turner of Virden, IL, step-daughters, Corina J. Eyer of Nilwood, IL and Shawndra M. Barnes of Carlinville, IL, brother Robert (Nada) Carrigan of Rochester, IL and several nieces and nephews. Preceding in death were his parents, son, Jay Carrigan, step-daughter Brianne Edwards and brother Mike Carrigan and a stillborn sister.

Virden – Doris I. Van Huss, 84, of Virden, IL passed away at 9:50 A.M. Tuesday, June 7, 2016 at Sunrise Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Virden, IL.

Doris was born November 8, 1931 in Girard, IL, a daughter to Coy & Bessie (Craig) Robinson.  Doris married Robert E. Lee Van Huss on July 5, 1950 in Springfield, IL.

Doris was a member of the Prairie  Temple Assembly of God Church, Virden, IL.  She worked at Memorial Medical Center, Sunrise Manor and also at Auburn Nursing Home.  She worked at the Virden Recorder for over 26 years and retired in 2014.  She loved to do crafting and loved to bake and was a loving mother and home maker.

Surviving Doris are her sons; Donald L. Van Huss of Springfield, IL, Rick L. Van Huss of Virden, IL; brother, Ronald (Pat) Robinson of TX; sister, Gladys Smothers of TX;  grandchildren; Russell Van Huss of Springfield, IL, Kassy Van Huss of Auburn, IL, Tanner Van Huss of Springfield, IL;  great-grandchildren; Addelae Montgomery, Annabell Montgomery and Bailey Van Huss and several nieces & nephews.  Doris is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Robert E. Lee Van Huss and sister, Dorothy Harms.

Visitation will be from 9:00 – 11:00 A.M. Saturday, June 11, 2016 at Prairie Temple Assembly of God Church with the service starting immediately following the visitation with the Rev. Thayer – Wilbur Lee Pitchford, 88, of Thayer, IL passed away at 9:04 P.M. Thursday, May 26, 2016 at Sunrise Manor in Virden, IL.

Wilbur was born in Girard, IL on June 14, 1927, son of Gilbert J. and Leila (Perrine) Pitchford.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Phyllis June (Adcock) Pitchford of Thayer, IL; sons Gregory (Carol) Pitchford of Oak Point, TX; David (Emily) Pitchford of Egg Harbor, WI; daughter Pamela (Leslie) Warden of Auburn, IL; 4 Grandsons, Trever (Andrea) Warden of Auburn, IL; William and Ryan Pitchford of Egg Harbor, WI; Gregory Pitchford of Oak Point, TX; 3 Great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Preceding Wilbur in death were his parents; two brothers, Gilbert and Everett Pitchford, and one sister, Ethel (Joe) Hall.

Wilbur proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII on the Landing Ship Tank LST1015 from 1945 to 1946. He also participated in an Honor Flight with his grandson Trever, also a veteran, in October 2013.

He retired from Commonwealth Edison on February 10,1988, after 21 years of service and was a proud member of the Boilermakers Union. Prior to Commonwealth Edison, one of Wilbur’s favorite workplaces was the Springfield Boiler shop. He shared many fond memories from both places.

There will be no visitation. Cremation rites accorded by Calvert and Ferry Funeral Home, Virden, IL. There will be a Celebration of Life Gathering at 11:30 a.m. Saturday June 18, 2016 at the Virden American Legion Hall in Virden, IL. Catherine M. “Cathy” Huffman

Virden – Catherine M. “Cathy” Huffman, 64 of Virden, IL passed away Thursday May 26, 2016 at Memorial Medical Center Springfield, IL.

Cathy was born March 22, 1952 in Seabird Island British Columbia, Canada as a full blooded Indian to Clement and Gertrude (Louie) Harry and immigrated to Illinois at age 5. She married Orville L. “Sonny” Huffman Dec. 11, 1974 in DuQuoin, IL and liven in Virden to raise her family. She was preceded in death by her parents Clement Harry and Gertrude Power. For the recent years, Cathy was employed by MCL Cafeteria. She was also active in iWorship Center taking classes and attending services. She was preparing to graduate from the School of Leaders.

Cathy enjoyed bingo, playing the lottery, dancing and listening to saxophone music. She particularly loved listening to Alabama. Her hobbies included making beautiful jewelry for friend and family. She loved family gatherings, helping people out and being with friends at church. She was dearly loved be co-workers at MCL for forty years. They reported that she cooked them breakfast every day.

In addition to Sonny, her husband, Cathy leaves two sons, Joseph C. (Rachel) Huffman of Litchfield, IL and A.J. Huffman of Virden, IL, daughter, Pamela S. (Travis) Schweitzer of Poplar Grove, IL, sisters, Eleanor Menke of Missouri, Velma McKinnon of Canada and Sylvia Fox of Indiana, brothers Francis and Phillip John Power both of Newfoundland, Canada, 5 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Tuesday May 31, 2016 at Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home Virden, IL with funeral services at 5:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Pastor George Bucks officiating.
