Lowder – Nancy R. Frye 59 of Lowder passed away Sunday November 15, 2015 in Carlinville, IL.

Nancy was born December 28, 1955 in Springfield, IL a daughter of Paul and Clara (Kidd) Frye. Nancy was a sign painter for many years mentored by Jim Palmer. She enjoyed her time with the Girl Scouts of America.

Surviving Nancy is her daughter Nicki M. Palmer of Carlinville, IL, her mother Clara Frye of Lowder, IL, 2 grandsons, 1 great grandson and a very loving blended family. Preceding in death was her father Paul Frye.

Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Saturday November 21, 2015 at the Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home in Virden, IL with funeral services at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Rev. Virden – William L. McCarty 75 of Virden, IL formerly of Auburn, IL passed away at 11:30 a.m. Monday Nov. 9, 2015 surround by his loving family.

Bill was born January 16, 1940 in Roby, IL a son of Floyd and Mary (Justus) McCarty. He married Sharon Y. Hollis February 26, 1960 in Springfield, IL. Bill served in the U. S. Marine Corp from 1958 to 1964. He was a member of the First Church of The Nazarene in Auburn, IL a member of the N.R.A. Legion of Honor, a Kentucky Colonel, a member of the Single Action Shooting Society and a member of the American Legion in Carlinville, IL. Bill was the former Chief of Police in Auburn, IL for many years and also for Chief of Police for Loami, IL for 4 years. After retiring from police work Bill worked at Henry Technology in Chatham, IL. He was a great out doors man who loved hunting and fishing.

Surviving Bill is his wife, Sharon Y. McCarty of Virden, IL, son, David W. (DeeDee) McCarty of Auburn, IL, daughters, Jamie (Wade) Hamilton of Virden, IL, Mona L. Franklin and Michelle J. (Donald) Franklin both of Waverly, IL, 6 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Preceding death were Bill’s parents and many loved ones.


Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home Auburn, IL, has accorded cremation rites. There will be a Celebration of Life Gathering from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Sunday Nov. 15, 2015 at the First Church of The Nazarene Church in Auburn, IL with Memorial Services at 3:00 p.m. Rev. Lyle Artman and Rev. Norlynn Crandall officiating. Memorials may be made to Memorial Medical Center Hospice Program or to the family. Thayer – Richard P. Hays, 70 of Thayer, IL passed away Thursday November 5, 2015 at St. John’s Hospital Springfield, IL.

Richard was born September 11, 1945 in Springfield, IL, a son of Dale and Betty (Coffey) Hays. He married Margaret D. Bolletto October 7, 1966 in Springfield, IL. Richard was a member of the UMW of America and worked at Crown Mine in Farmersville, IL and retired from Monterey Coal Co. in Carlinville, IL after 28 years.

Surviving Richard is his wife Margaret D. Hays of Thayer, IL, son, Richard P. Hays Jr. of Carlinville, IL, a daughter, Cynthia L. (Lane) Ingram of Athens, IL, 4 grandchildren, a brother Larry (Ethel) Hays of Girard, IL and several nieces and nephews. Preceding death were his parents, Dale Hays and mother Betty Hurst.

EdnaVirden – Surrounded by loved ones, Edna L. Hart, 96, of Virden, IL passed away at 4:15 P.M. on Friday, October 30, 2015 at Memorial Medical Center, Springfield, IL.  An amazingly strong woman, Edna remained independent and managed her home until her passing.

Edna was born in Lincoln, IL on October 15, 1919, a daughter to Ross J. & Nettie M. (Bates) Davison.  Edna was joined in marriage to Byron Butler Hart, known as Butler by friends and family, during the Christmas season, on December 19, 1945 in Springfield, IL.

Edna attended the Illinois Business College in Springfield, IL.   Together, Edna and Butler owned and operated their family business, Hart Distributors for over 45 years, while raising their children.

Edna leaves many to share her love and memories; her children; Mrs. Rebecca (Gary) Cotterman of Virden, IL; Burton “John” L. Hart of Auburn, IL, Ross A. Hart of Rolling Meadows, IL; a brother, Amos H. Davison of New Berlin, IL; stepson, Byron L. (Carla) Hart of Denton, TX; 5 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews; dearest friend, Alice Zollinger and honorary family members; Sandra Whitehurst and Sondra Bozin.  Preceding Edna in death are her parents; her beloved husband, Byron “Butler” Hart and brother, Ivan Davison.

Per Edna’s request there will be no formal visitation. Virden – Melinda R. Lindsey, 48 of Troy, IL, formerly of Virden and Girard, IL, passed away Wednesday October 21, 2015 at Anderson Hospital Maryville, IL.

Melinda was born August 4, 1967 in Carlinville, IL, a daughter of Neil and Barbara (Summer) Brown Sr. She was a homemaker and liked yard sales, playing computer games and spending time with her family and friends.

Surviving Melinda is her son, William “Billy” Flowers of Hillsboro, IL, 2 grandchildren, sisters, Debbie (Rob) Skaggs of Champaign, IL, Pam (companion; Tom Hatalla) Griffin of Virden, IL, Kim Brown of Louisiana, MO, and Angie (companion, Chuck Eyer) Holthouse of Thayer, IL, brothers, Neil (Linda) Brown of Benld, IL, and David Brown of Champaign, IL, companion, Carl Sawyers of Troy, IL, and several nieces and nephews. Preceding in death were her parents, sister, Brenda Coleman and brother, Brad Barton.

Reba L Crawford

Reba Lorraine Crawford

Springfield, IL – Reba Lorraine Crawford, 89, died Saturday, October 17, 2015, at St. John’s Hospice in Springfield.  A lifelong resident of Springfield, Illinois, Reba was born August 3, 1926, to Lula and Charles Best.  She married Stanley Crawford on May 16, 1947. She is survived by her three children: Karen Taft of Cross Roads, Texas; Debbie (husband Bob) Mill of Maryville, Illinois; and Roger (wife Rita) Carwford of Olathe, Kansas. Additionally, she is survived by nine grandchildren and six great-granddaughters. She is also survived by a sister, Ellen Watkins of Springfield.

Reba was preceded in death by her husband in1974; her parents, five brothers and five sisters.

Reba was a 1944 graduate of Feitshans High School.  She was employed by Marine Bank for 30 years, retiring in 1987.  She also served 17 years as a part-time court clerk for the Sangamon County Courts. Reba was an avid volunteer, including weekly shifts at the Ronald McDonald House from 1988 until September 2015. Recently she was recognized for her work at the Ronald McDonald House on the “Pay it Forward” segment aired on WICS-TV.  Other volunteer work includes First Night Springfield, Memorial Medical Center’s Festival of Trees, and Brownie Scout Leader.

She was a member of First Christian Church, Lady Elks Auxiliary, and the same Bunco Club for 50 years. Reba enjoyed working in her yard, traveling, sewing, bowling, crafts and rooting for the St. Louis Cardinals.  And, she very much enjoyed visiting with friends and family.

Calvert and Ferry Funeral Home of Girard, IL is in charge of arrangements.  At Reba’s request funeral services will be private. Rev. Rick Irwin officiating. Burial will be in Girard Cemetery. Pallbearers: Brian, Eric and Jarred Mill, Aaron Taft, Ryan Crawford and Kris Spurgin.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Christian Church (700 S 6th St, Springfield, IL 62703); and to the Ronald McDonald House (610 N. 7th St., Springfield, IL 62702).

Girard-Lela “Bell” Leach, 87, of Girard, IL formerly of Waggoner, IL passed away at 7:00 P.M. Thursday, October 15, 2015 at Pleasant Hill Village, Girard, IL.

Lela was born March 12, 1928 in Girard, IL a daughter to Edwin & Eva (Whalsmith) Sanders. Lela married Aldo Leach on December 18, 1946 in Carlinville, IL.

Lela was a member of the United Methodist Church of Farmersville, IL. Her favorite pastime was to embroidery.

Surviving Lela are sisters; Hazel Gudgel of Springfield, IL, Barbara Gudgel of Waggoner, IL, Edna Sanders of Taylorville, IL and Guardian, Lois McCarson of San Jose, IL. Preceding Lela in death were her parents, husband, Aldo Leach., sisters, Nellie Gill, Lorene Adams and Ruby Vollintine, brothers, Howell “Gus”, Morris “Shorty”, Leonard and George Sanders.

Visitation will be from Noon to 1:00 p.m. Monday October 19, 2015 at Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home Girard, IL with funeral services at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Linda Vonck officiating. Burial will be in Bethel Ridge Cemetery Atwater, IL. Pallbearers are Nicholas Crain, Gary Gudgel, Chris Gudgel, Robert Adams, Frank Hammera and Dakota Wallace.
