Virden– Mary A. Lair, 93 of Virden, IL passed away Sunday February 12, 2017 at Sunrise Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation in Virden, IL.

Mary was born October 21, 1923 in rural Modesto, IL a daughter to Walter “Bowse” and Ruth (Breeding) Goode. She married Warren G. Lair May 28, 1948 in Girard, IL. Mary graduated from IL State University in Normal, IL with a BA degree. She was an active member of Grace Southern Baptist Church in Virden, IL for over 70 years. Mary taught for over 27 years and the last 18 years she taught Kindergarten in Virden, IL.

Surviving Mary is her husband, Warren G. Lair of Virden, IL, daughter, Barbara G. (David) Kett of Golden, CO, sons, John W. (Sandy) Lair of Hillsdale, IN and Thomas C. “Tom” (Laura) Lair of Roselle, IL, grandchildren, Mike (Samantha) Canfield, Mary (Greg) Todd, Amanda (Jared) Lair, Emma Kett, Dana and Cory Lair.  Great grandchildren, Nora Lair, Makayla and Lilly Canfield, Hannah and Graysen Todd, brother, Roy (Carol) Goode of Fountain Hills, AZ and several nieces and nephews. Preceding in death were her parents, sister, Irma DeMumbrun, Norma Coverdill and Flora Malterud and her brothers, Dale and Richard Goode.

Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday February 14, 2017 at Grace Southern Baptist Church in Virden, IL with funeral services at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday February 15, 2017 at the Church. Rev. Girard – Patricia S. Olguin 69, of Girard, IL passed away Thursday February 2, 2017 at Memorial Medical Center Springfield, IL.

Pat was born October 16, 1947 in Carlinville, IL a daughter of Jerald and Martha (Trakinat) Maguire. She was a 1965 graduate of Virden High School, Virden, IL. Pat married Ralph E. Olguin January 4, 1989. Pat formerly worked as a loan officer at First Midwest Savings and Loan in Virden, IL, was a former Councilwomen for the City of Girard, and was on the board of directors for Prairieland Ambulance in Virden, IL.

Surviving Pat are her sons, Daniel (Colleen) Bounds of Cary, IL and David Bounds of Virden, IL, step-daughters Melody Olguin of Murphysboro, IL, Anita (Gary) Wilson of Ramsey, IL and Sherri White of Chatham, IL, step-sons, Frank Olguin of Green River, WY and Robert Olguin of Sesser, IL, several grandchildren and great grandchildren, sister Carole Britenstine of Virden, IL, brothers, Eugene (Betty) Maguire of Carlinville, IL and Jerry Maguire of Virden, IL several nieces, nephews and cousins. Preceding in death were her parents, husband Ralph E. Olguin, and brothers Richard and Jack Maguire.

Thayer – Susan A. Evans 51 of Thayer, IL passed away Friday January 27, 2017 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, IL.

Susan was born July 17, 1965 in Springfield, IL a daughter of David and Mildred (Favre) Jones. She graduated from Virden High School in 1983 and was a member of the First Christian Church in Virden, IL. Susan married Thomas W. Evans on May 18, 1985 in Virden, IL. She worked for the Illinois E.P.A.

Surviving Susan is her husband, Thomas W. Evans of Thayer, IL, daughter, Audrey M. (fiancé: Tom Thursby) Evans of Palmyra, IL, son, Matthew D. Evans of Thayer, IL, father, David Jones of Virden, IL, sisters, Jacqueline (Scott) Myers of Virden, IL and Yvonne (Kenneth) Allen of Virden, IL, brothers, Bill (Laura) Jones of Girard, IL and Mark Jones of Virden, IL and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Preceding her in death was her mother, Mildred Jones.

Girard – John D. “Hippie” Scifers 59 of Girard, IL passed away Thursday January 26, 2017 at his residence.

Hippie was born April 23, 1957 in Springfield, IL. He was raised by Elsie and Les Scifers. Hippie attended Girard High School in Girard, IL and served in the U.S. Army and Illinois National Guard. He was a self-employed dry waller working in the area for over 30 years. Hippie enjoyed being out back in Hippie Hollow with friends and family.

Hippie is survived by daughters, Chala (Michael) Hutchins of Girard, IL and Jessica Miller of Taylorville, IL, sons, Chad (Stephanie) Scifers of Girard, IL, Cruz and Chantz Scifers both of Thayer, IL, 10 grandchildren, Uncle Jim (Judy) Prichard of Springfield, IL, sisters, Anita (Gary) Wolfe of Fountain Hills, AZ, Darlene (husband, Bill) (Prichard) Kroah of Pomona, CA and Margaret Tru of Girard, IL and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Preceded in death by his biological Father, Dale Raymond Prichard and Grandmother and adoptive mother and adopted father Elsie (Zglicenski-Prichard) and Les Scifers.

Burnsville, MN – Vivian “Eileen” Green 94 of Burnsville, MN formerly of Girard and Springfield, IL, passed away Thursday January 19, 2017 at Ebenezer Ridges Nursing Home in Burnsville, MN.

Eileen was born October 22, 1922 in Girard, IL a daughter of Ernest and Bessie (Smithson) Riffey. She earned her nursing degree from DePaul Hospital School of Nursing in September 1945 and in May of 1976 earned her Bachelor of Science from the College of St. Francis in Joliet, IL. Eileen married Harold Glen Green December 28, 1948 in Piggott, AR. Eileen retired in 1983, after working as a school nurse for the Springfield School District No.186 in Springfield, IL.

Eileen is survived by her daughter, Sandra E. (Jeff) Green-Nielsen and her son Harold Ray Green both of Burnsville, MN, 7 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, brother, Lowell Raymond “Ray” Riffey of Carlinville, IL, sisters, Ellen “Kay” Torrens of Bloomington, IL, Cheryl Ann (Mike) Huddle of Peoria, IL, Martha “Marti” Faye (Larry) Bingham of Vandalia, IL, several nieces, nephews and cousins. Preceeding in death were her parents, husband, Harold Glen Green and sister-in-law Edna Eileen Riffey.

Springfield – Lamira M. Riffey, 87 of Springfield, IL formerly of Virden, IL passed away at her residence Saturday January 21, 2017.

Lamira was born March 8, 1929 in Nilwood, IL a daughter of Nelson and Etta (Grigg) Fouts. She was a 1946 graduate of Virden High School and married John Warren “Cotton” Riffey September 10, 1949 in Nilwood, IL. Lamira was a member of Springfield Southern Baptist Church in Springfield, IL. and formerly worked at Horace Mann Insurance Company for 15 years as an actuarial clerk. Life member of the Military Order of the Purple Auxiliary.

Surviving Lamira is her daughter Janet E. Elliott of Virden, IL, her son, Darrell E. (Sharon) Riffey of Springfield, IL., 1 step-grandson and 3 step great grandchildren, a sister, Linda M. (Bob) Pitchers of Pontoon Beach, IL, a brother, Leo M. (Margie) Fouts of Virden, IL and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Preceding in death was her husband Warren “Cotton” Riffey, son-in-law Carl Elliott, sister, Lyda M. Cowell and brothers, Lester and Loren Fouts

Frank Maynerich Sr.

Thayer–Frank Maynerich, 95, of Thayer, IL passed away at 1:05 P.M. Tuesday, January 17, 2017 at St. John’s Hospice in Springfield, Illinois.

Frank was born on June 5, 1921 in Thayer, IL a son to Luke and Anna (Sokach) Maynerich.  Frank was a 1939 graduate of Virden High School.  Frank married Agnes B. Morelock on May 10, 1947 in Virden, IL.

Frank served in the U.S. Army during WW II and was assigned to the 42nd Rainbow Division Headquarters Battery.  His unit was responsible for liberating 32,000 prisoners at Dachau, Germany.  Frank worked for Fiat-Allis Mfg. in Springfield, IL for over 38 years as a store keeper retiring in 1983.  He was a third degree member of the Virden Knights of Columbus Council #2321 and former Assistant Fire Chief of Thayer Virden Fire Protection District.  Frank was an avid vegetable gardener and loved to make wine.

Surviving Frank are his sons, Joseph L. Maynerich of Thayer, IL, George Maynerich of Athens, IL, Deacon Greg (Debra) Maynerich of Auburn, IL; daughters, Patsy A. Allen of Thayer, IL, Theresa (Chuck) Sharp of Auburn, IL; sisters, Irene Vicich of Chicago, IL, Mary O’Brien of Thayer, IL; 19 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews & cousins.  Preceding Frank in death are his parents; wife, Agnes Maynerich; son, Frank Maynerich Jr.; grandson, Paul Maynerich; great granddaughter, Addison Sharp; brothers, Louis and Michael Maynerich; infant brother, Steve Maynerich and sisters, Margaret Blauvelt and Ann Schuster.

Visitation will be from 4:15 to 8:00 P.M. on Friday, January 20, 2017 at Sacred Heart Church, Virden, IL with a Prayer Service at 4:00 P.M.  Funeral Mass will be at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, January 21, 2017 at Sacred Heart Church with Rev. Father George Morelock, Rev. Father James Palakudy, Rev. Father Robert Spriggs, Rev. Father Christopher House, Rev. Father John Nolan, Rev.
