Litchfield – Karen L. Thomas, 59 of Litchfield, IL formerly of Virden, IL, passed away Tuesday July 19, 2016 at St. John’s Hospice in Springfield, IL.

Karen was born July 23, 1956 in Springfield, IL a daughter to Elmer R. and Edith (Ramsey) Rogers. She graduated from Lamphier High School in Springfield, IL. Karen worked as a cook at St. John’s Hospital and formerly worked at Bonny’s Bakery in Virden, IL.

Surviving Karen are her daughters, Karie L. (Steven) Loving of Chatham, IL, and Kayla A. (Christopher) Smith of Rota, Spain, a son Kyle L. Thomas of Virden, IL, 6 grandchildren, sister, Janet (Thomas) Miller of Springfield, IL and brother Elmer R. (Joanie) Rogers of Springfield, IL, several nieces and nephews. Preceding in death were her parents, and a brother, Melvin E. Rogers.

Following cremation graveside of ashes will be at 1:00 p.m. Friday July 22, 2016 at Oak Hill Cemetery in Springfield, IL. Chatham – Mark Wayne Molen, 59, of Chatham, IL passed away Sunday, July 10, 2016 at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, MO after battling Ocular Melanoma (cancer).

Mark was born May 20, 1957 in Springfield, IL. His parents are Delbert Wayne and Dorothy Louise (Denney) Molen. He graduated from Virden High School in 1975, where he played football and basketball and served in FFA. Mark attended Lincoln Land Community College in Springfield, IL, where he studied soil science and played basketball. He co-owned Molen Family Farms and Molen Grain Co, and acted as president of Jet Transit Co. and contracted as a consultant to Seth Molen Construction Inc.

Surviving Mark is his daughter Kayla N. (Michael) Thomas of Springfield; sons Seth Wayne (Ivy) Molen of Springfield, IL, Grant C., Luke T. and Rhett D. Molen all of Taylorville, IL; mother Louise Molen of Virden, IL; grandsons Mason and Knox Thomas of Springfield, IL; sisters Linda Louise Waddell of Springfield, IL, Billie Sue (Ray) Landers of Auburn, IL and Annette S. Molen of Virden, IL; and several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Mark was preceded in death by his father Delbert Wayne Molen, brother John I. Molen and nephew Michael Scott McCarty.

Visitation is from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 16, 2016 at Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home in Virden, IL. Funeral service will follow the visitation. Pastor James Wolfe officiating. Virden – Freeman L. Smallwood 91 of Virden, IL passed away Saturday July 9, 2016 at Memorial Medical Center Springfield, IL.

Freeman was born July 27, 1924 in Stephensburg, KY a son to Roy and Stella (Akers) Smallwood. He attended grade schools in Louisville, KY and graduated from Old Male High School in Louisville, KY. He joined the U.S. Navy at the age of 17 and served during WW II on three different ships: U.S.S. Mission Bay, U.S.S. Baffins and U.S.S. Helenick, an aircraft carrier where he worked in the boiler room and was a champion Featherweight Boxer. After the service he worked for Allis Chalmers / Fiat-Allis in Springfield, IL as a Tool and Die Maker. He was a member of UAW Local #1027 and was the Chief Union negotiator for a 30 year and out with full benefits contract and was the first to retire under this contract at age 53.

Freeman married Marie L. Neal June 9, 1962 in Springfield, IL. He loved riding motorcycles, dancing, spending winters in Florida and living on the river with great fish fries in his younger years and being with his family.

Freeman is survived by his daughters, Sharon Marquez of Mt. Vernon, IL and Laquita (John) Grant of LaGrange Park, IL, son’s John Mark Graham of Waverly, IL and Dennis Allen Graham of Springfield, IL, 3 grandsons, 4 great grandchildren, 2 great great granddaughters, sister, Janet Bivens of Shepherdsville, KY, 1 niece, 1 nephew, 3 great nieces and 2 great great nieces. Preceding Freeman in death were his parents, wife Marie L. Smallwood, sons, Freeman R. and Burley R. Smallwood, granddaughter Alina Graham and sister Juanita Smallwood (in childhood).

Visitation will be from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Thursday July 14, 2016 at Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home Virden, IL with funeral services at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Lake Wales, FL Naomi K. Davidson, 98, of Lake Wales, FL, formerly of Virden, IL passed away Tuesday, July 5, 2016 at 1:42 A.M. at her residence in Lake Wales, FL.

Naomi was born in Auburn Township, IL on September 12, 1917 a daughter to Everett E. & Laura (Lear) Brubaker Sr.  She later married Eldon Dale Davidson on May 4, 1941 in Virden, IL.

Naomi was a member of the Church of the Brethren, Virden, IL as well as a member of the Virden American Legion Auxiliary and a member of the Virden Woman’s Club.  She taught school and later co-owned Davidson’s Drug Store in Virden with her husband.

Surviving Naomi is a daughter, Rebecca J. (James) Griffin of Lake Wales, FL; 1 daughter-in-law, Carol Davidson of Girard, IL; 5 grandchildren, Angela (Mike) Agnich, New Lennox, IL, Audra (Bryan) Emberton, Winter Haven, FL, Joel (Jill) Sharp, Springfield, IL, Laura (Ronnie) Edge, Chicago, IL, Brandon (Beth) Griffin, Wentzville, MO; 8 great-grandchildren, Macie and Ashlyn Agnich, Cole Griffin, Thatcher and Cutler Emberton, Mia, Mason, and Scarlett Griffin and several nieces and nephews.  Preceding Naomi in death are her parents; husband, Eldon Dale Davidson; son, Stephen Dale Davidson; 2 brothers, J. Paul Brubaker, Everett E. Brubaker, Jr; 3 sisters, Dorothy E. Fahs-Burris, M. Ruth Thomas, Erma E. Long.

Virden – Charles S. Blevins, 94, of Virden, IL passed away at 7:15 A.M. on Friday, July 1, 2016 at Pleasant Hill Village in Girard, IL.

Charles was born on July 6, 1921 in Fairborn, OH, a son to Walter E. & Sally (Salter) Blevins.  He later married Ruth Strongman on August 2, 1942 in St. Charles, MO.

Charles joined the Army and served during WW II.  He also served in the Illinois National Guard as an inspector for fire control retiring in 1981 after 32 years of service,  He was also a member of the Grace Southern Baptist Church, Virden, IL and a 32nd degree Mason with Ansar Temple in Springfield, IL.  He was a member of the National Rifle Association and he loved to fish, feed the birds and squirrels around the house but most of all he loved wood working.

Surviving Charles is his second wife, Evelyn J. (Snarr) Blevins of Virden, IL; sons, Jack (Sue) Blevins of Mahomet, IL, Charles (Lynn) Blevins of Madison, AL; daughters, Amanda Blevins and Charla (Nason) Shafer both of Colorado Springs, CO; brother, Russell Blevins of Bradenton, FL; 3 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.  Preceding Charles in death are his parents, first wife, Ruth (Strongman) Blevins and brother, Earl Blevins.

Visitation will be from 11:00 A.M. until 12:00 Noon on Tuesday, July 5, 2016 at the Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home, Virden, IL.  Graveside services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Springfield – James O. “Jim” Squires 55 of Springfield, IL passed away at his home Wednesday June 22, 2016 in Springfield, IL.

Jim was born May 4, 1961 in Des Moines, IA a son to June Bucks. He attended Howe Military School in Howe, IN and was an avid Chicago White Sox and Chicago Bears fan and enjoyed fishing, golfing, being grandpa “papa Jim” and loved pens. Jim worked as a food production manager at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, IL.

Surviving Jim is his daughters, Joie M. Squires of Thayer, IL and Jessica L. (Brandon) Leonard of Middletown, IL, 3 grandchildren, Jayleigh, Bryan and Greyson, two brothers, Robert (Donna) Squires and Thomas Squires both of Springfield, IL and several nieces and nephews. Preceding in death was Jim’s mother.

Visitation will be from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Saturday June 25, 2016 at the Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home, Virden, IL with services at 3:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Rev. John Huxtable officiating. Virden – Vernon J. “Snuffy” Wilson, 85 of Virden, IL passed away Sunday June 19, 2016 at Memorial Medical Center Springfield, IL.

Snuffy was born Nov. 4, 1930 in Litchfield, IL a son to Luther I. and Spray (Pease) Wilson. He married Gloria V. Castleman June 28, 1952 in Litchfield, IL. Snuffy retired from Fiat-Allis in Springfield, IL after 35 years and he formerly work at Virden Cemetery for 14 years. He served with the U. S. Army in Germany and then with the IL National Guard. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Virden, IL and the Elmer E. Vance American Legion Post #386 in Virden, IL. Snuffy was a loving father, grandfather and great grandfather and a avid Cardinal fan and gardener. He was also an old time country and bluegrass music fan.

Surviving are his sons, Vernon E. “Gene” (Brenda) Wilson of Springfield, IL, Gary D. Wilson of Virden, IL, Greg L. (Christi) Wilson of Riverton, IL and Gerald A. (Tracy) Wilson of Berlin, IL, 7 grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild, a sister, Alice (Ray) Schwab of Litchfield, IL, brothers Jimmy L. (Ruthann) Wilson of Taylorville, IL and Paul Dean (Shirley) Wilson of Litchfield, IL and several nieces and nephews. Preceding in death were his wife Gloria, brothers, Elmer, Kenneth, Leroy and Richard Wilson and sisters, Opal Hefley and Alberta Stewart.
