Springfield – Charles J. “Charlie” Garbin, 89 of Springfield, IL formerly of Chatham and Girard, IL passed away Sunday March 18, 2018 at St. John’s Hospital Springfield, IL.

Charlie was born November 9, 1928 in Girard, IL, a son of Cipriano and Angelina (Sommavilla) Garbin. He was a graduate of Girard High School Girard, IL and retired from the State of Illinois. Charlie married Grace Madonia January 29, 1966 and was a former member of St. Pat’s Church in Girard, IL, and a member of St. Joseph’s Church in Springfield, IL.

Charlie is survived by his brother Albeno P. (Carol) Garbin of Arnoldsville, GA, several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Grace Garbin, sisters, Valentine Perona and Marjorie A. Kornet, brothers, Abraham, John, Pete, Dominic, Albert and an infant Alberto Garbin.

Visitation will be from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday March 22, 2018 at Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home Girard, IL with funeral services at 11:30 a.m.  at the funeral home. Springfield – Dorothy C. Erwin 96, of Springfield, IL, passed away Tuesday March 13, 2018 at Lewis Memorial Christian Village Springfield, IL.

Dorothy was born November 6, 1921 in Ottawa, IL, a daughter of Joseph and Josephine (Furlan) Scheck. She married Clifford H. Erwin May 20, 1943 in LaSalle, IL. Dorothy was a homemaker and a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Charleston, IL.

Dorothy is survived by her sons, Clifford J. (Donna) Erwin of Springfield, IL, Ronald M. (Rhonda) Erwin of Madison, GA, Mark H. (Dorothy) Erwin of Kenneshaw GA, and Scott E. (Charlotte) Erwin of Mattoon, IL, 8 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, sister, Josephine Fowler of Downers Grove, IL, and several nieces and nephews. Preceding in death were her parents, husband, Clifford H. Erwin, sisters, Helen Bertalen, Ann Schultz and Mary Anderson, brothers, Joseph and Don Scheck.

Nancy B. SAchaafsma, 71 of Girard, IL, passed away Tuesday March 13, 2018 at Heritage Hospice in Springfield, IL. Nancy was born August 26, 1946 in Chicago, IL, a daughter of Frederick M. and Josephine “Hazel” (Strauss) Klaves. She worked for Bruske Products in Tinley Park, IL as a customer rep retiring after 17 years. Nancy married Raymond M. Schaafsma July 26, 1996 in Markham, IL.

Nancy is survived by her husband Raymond M. Schaafsma, son Paul M. (Emily) Widuch of San Diego, CA, daughter, Bernadette Widuch of Lombard, IL, 7 grandchildren, Alexander, Daniel, Rylee, Marisa, Drew, Cole and Sarah, daughter-in-law, Mariola Widuch of Mesa, AZ, step-son, David M. Schaafsma of Bloomington, IL, step-daughter, Kari Ann (Sean) Moen of Crete, IL. Preceding in death was her parents and a son, Mark Widuch.

Visitation will be from Noon March 17, to 1:30 p.m. Saturday March 17, 2018 at Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home Virden, IL, with funeral services at 1:30 p.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Howard Smith

Howard Lee Smith, 73, of Girard, died at Sunday morning, March 4, 2018, following an auto accident on Interstate 72 near Jacksonville.

Born March 26, 1944, in Springfield, he was the son of Lewis Albert and Verna Aileen Moffett Smith. He married Janice Kay Frederick Dec. 11, 1965, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Virden. Three brothers, Terry (March 24, 1999), Michael (June 25, 2007), and Richard (March 4, 2010), preceded in death.

A 1963 graduate of Virden High School, he was a four year U.S. Air Force veteran serving in Thailand during the Viet Nam conflict. Previous to military service, he was employed by Allis Chalmers Manufacturing in Springfield. For over 40 years, he was a self-employed truck owner/operator, lastly with the Landstar Corp., and currently operated Smith Pilot Car Service, providing high pole escort services to super loads shipped by tractor-trailer.

He was a member of Virden American Post #386; Veterans of Foreign Wars; Royal Arch Masons Girard/Virden Chapter #161, where he presently served as Senior Warden; R.A.M. Girard Chapter #132; Carrollton Council #48; and Omer Commandery #30.

Surviving are his wife, Janice of Girard; a son, Tim (Debra) Smith of Humble, Tex., formerly of Virden; a daughter, Amy (Richard) McElfresh of Girard; six grandchildren, Zachary (Lisa) Allen of St. Charles, Mo., Brendon Gerdes of Mt. Pulaski, Ryon Smith of Sun City, Calif., Ashley Gerdes of Utica, Cody Smith of Glen Carbon and Connor McElfresh of Cape Girardeau, Mo.; one great-granddaughter, Paislee Elizabeth Allen; four sisters, Patricia Burke of Louisburg, Kans., Carol (Chuck) Hurley of Stella, Mo., Cathy Molen and Gail Smith, both of Taylorville; an aunt, several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation will be Saturday, March 10, from 10 a.m. until time of services, 12 noon, at the Calvert and Ferry Funeral Home, Virden, with Richard McElfresh officiating.  American Legion and Masonic Lodge rites will be prior to services. Burial will follow in Mechanicsburg Cemetery. Pallbearers are Tim Smith, Richard McElfresh, Zach Allen, Ryon and Cody Smith and Connor McElfresh. Honorary pallbearers are Ashley and Brendon
Gerdes, Colin McCabe and Don Bruna.

Virden – Evelyn M. Smith, 89, of Springfield, IL formerly of Virden, IL passed away at 1:00 A.M. Thursday, February 22, 2018 at Heritage Health Care in Springfield, IL.

Evelyn was born in Virden, IL on May 30, 1928 a daughter to Albert T. & Hannah (Evans) Gall.  She married Harold L. Smith on January 19, 1947 in Virden, IL

There wasn’t many things that Evelyn didn’t like to do.  She loved to work in her garden, listen to music and go dancing, go fishing, travel for a vacation and enjoyed cooking big meals for her family.  Evelyn formerly worked for Sangamo Electric in Springfield, IL.

Surviving Evelyn is her husband, Harold L. Smith of Springfield, IL; grandchildren, Aaron C. (Mercedes) Smith of Springfield, IL, Aimee L. Smith of Phoenix, AZ, Alyson L. (Joshua) Nickerson of Springfield, IL and several nieces and nephews.  Preceding her in death are her parents; son, Richard L. Smith; Brothers, Albert Gall Jr, William Gall, Bernard Gall and sister, Delores Allen.

Visitation will be from 1:00 to 3:00 P.M. Monday, February 26, 2018 at the Calvert & FerryFuneral Home in Virden, IL.  The funeral service will start immediately following the visitation at 3:00 P.M with Aaron C. Sgt. Brock Evans Scoggins








Mt. Vernon-Sgt. Brock Evan Scoggins, 27, passed away on Sunday, February 18, 2018 at Franklin County Hospital.

Brock was born on June 12, 1990 to Richard Scoggins and Tina (Shores) Scoggins.

Brock was a Sergeant in the U.S. Army National Guard, serving as a medic. He was a registered nurse at Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon.  Brock loved playing soccer and played all through school and was currently playing in a league.  He enjoyed hunting, anything outdoors, the St. Louis Cardinals, his dogs and especially loved spending time with his family.

Survivors include:  Soul mate, Tawna Jean Morehead and their children, Brandon, Jewelia and Zola; Mother, Tina Scoggins and step-father, Steven Horrighs, Sr.; Father, Richard and (Vicky) Scoggins; Grandparents-Robert and Barbara Shores; Sisters: Whitney and (Austin) Waldron, Ashley and (Derrik) Liddell, Alyssa and (Gary) Rhoades, Jr.; Brother, Justin and (Mary) Woods; Step-brothers; Steven and (Rebecca) Horrighs, Joshua Horrighs and Several nieces and nephews

There will be a Celebration of Life Gathering at Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home Virden, UIL from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday February 23, 2018.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 24, 2018 at 12pm at Blue Funeral Home in Marion. Burial will follow at Willow Rest Cemetery in Carterville.  Visitation will be on Saturday from 10am until the time of service at the funeral home.

Donations may be made to Ducks Unlimited and will be accepted at the funeral home.
