Girard – Richard A. Spellerberg, 96, of Girard, IL, passed away Saturday, February 28, 2015, at Pleasant Hill Village.

Richard was born November 29, 1918, in Chicago, IL a son of Arthur F. & Sibylla B. (Stippich) Spellerberg. He was a WW II veteran serving in the U.S. Army Air Force as a radio mechanic and operator and gunner. He flew 15 combat missions before his plane was shot down in the Black Thursday raids on Schweinfurt, Germany. He was a POW for nineteen months and was awarded a Purple Heart.

Surviving Richard are his sister Mildred Furman of Girard, IL; three nephews, including Stephen (Carolyn) Furman of Girard, IL; and several great nieces and great nephews. Preceding Richard in death are his parents and a sister, Gail Laut.

Allen E. Mortimer

Farmersville – Allen E. Mortimer 89 of Farmersville, IL passed away Thursday February 19, 2015 at Pleasant Hill Village, Girard, IL.

Allen was born February 11, 1926 in Springfield, IL a son of Charles E. and Henrietta (Day) Mortimer. Allen was a 1943 graduate of Virden High School. He married Wanda L. Bickel June 23, 1944 in Virden, IL. Allen was a member of the Thayer United Methodist Church; Thayer, IL Allen farmed with his father after high school. Following a back injury he was a bookkeeper in Pawnee. He then joined the Farmers and Merchant’s State bank in Virden in 1951 as a bookkeeper. After working at the bank he retired in 1978 as Vice President. At that time he returned to the love of his life farming.

Besides farming Allen was a devoted husband, father and grandfather, taking great pride in his children and grandchildren. Allen especially enjoyed sharing his knowledge and skills concerning farming, gardening, and woodworking. He also loved to tell stories.

 

Allen was active in community life.  He was on the Virden school board, active in Boy Scouts and the Virden Rotary Club. He also was a member of the Virden Cemetery Board for over 50 years.

 

Surviving Allen is his daughter, Nancy (Alex) Siudyla of Farmersville, IL, a son Evan (Rosemary) Mortimer of Palmetto, FL, 11 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren a daughter in law Terry (Bill Buske) Mortimer of Virden, IL and several cousins. Preceding Allen in death was his wife, Wanda L. Mortimer daughter, Mary Kim Mortimer and a son, Greg Mortimer.

 

Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Monday February 23, 2015 at Thayer United Methodist Church, Thayer, IL with funeral services to follow at 11:30 a.m. Rev. Charles L. Lowder – Carl D. Huffman, 63 of Virden, IL passed away Wednesday February 18, 2015 at St. John’s hospital in Springfield, IL from a massive heart attack.

Carl was born October 16, 1951 in Jacksonville, IL a son of Ernest W. and Gloria L. (Woodside) Huffman Sr. He married Virginia L. (Lettimore) Schofield on November 23, 1983 in Lowder, IL.

Carl was a U. S. Army veteran serving in Germany during Viet Nam and retired from the Army National Guard with over 20 years of service. He was a member of the Elmer E. Vance American Legion Post # 386 in Virden, IL, a 1970 graduate of Virden High School and formerly worked at the State Capitol for over 20 years and then for Henry Tech and retired from housekeeping with St. John’s hospital in 2013. Carl was a member of the Chummy Chainers Square Dancers and liked talking about his tour of duty with the Army while in Germany and enjoyed working with his flowers.

In addition to Carl’s generosity in life, Carl continues his generosity to countless individuals by being an organ donor.

Surviving Carl is his wife Virginia L. Huffman of Lowder, IL, daughters, Angela J. (Donny) Long of Hillview, IL, Caroline L. (Gary) Schulze of Lowder, IL, Sandy (Jim) Montgomery of Virden, IL and Debra D. (Aaron) Stanberry of Lowder, IL, 12 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, brothers, Orville L. “Sonny” (Cathy) Huffman of Virden, IL, Ernest W. (Marty) Huffman Jr. of Payson, AZ, Melvin L. (Janelle) Huffman of Hillsboro, OR, Robert J. “Bob” (Lucy) Huffman of Lowder, IL and Harold L. (Amber) Huffman of Virden, IL and several nieces and nephews. Preceding Carl in death were his parents, grandchildren Carter Schofield and Valerie Stanberry and his sister, Nancy Keil.

Virden – Deloris J. “Dee” Garbett 75 of Virden, IL passed away Monday February 16, 2015 at Memorial Medical Center Springfield, IL.

Dee was born August 8, 1939 in Virden, IL a daughter of Charles A. and Maxine (Grossner) Van Ausdall Sr.

She was a 1957 graduate of Virden High School and married Donald E. Garbett September 1, 1957 in Virden, IL. Dee was a member of Prairie Temple Assembly of God Church Virden, IL and formerly worked for Franklin Life Insurance Company in Springfield, IL. She was owner operator of Garbett Upholstery in Virden, IL and co-owned The Prairie Peddler in Virden, IL.

Dee is survived by her husband Donald E. Garbett of Virden, IL daughters Kristine R. (William) Garbett-Bruce of Virden, IL and Dawn M. (Sanjeev) Kumar of Munster, IN, grandchildren, Heidi (fiancé: Brad Regul) Bruce, Heath Bruce, Shailee Kumar and Shivani Kumar, brother, Charles A. “Chuck” (Linda) Van Ausdall Jr. of Virden, IL and several nieces and nephews. Preceding Dee in death were her parents and sister Ruth Young.

Betty was born July 31, 1933 in Buffalo Hart, IL a daughter of Earnest and Hallie Harris. She married Leonard D. Coleman Jr. June 20, 1953 in Springfield, IL. Betty was a member of Prairie Temple Assembly of God Church Virden, IL.

Surviving Betty is her daughter, Tammy S. (Ben) Stetson of Virden, IL, Ruth M. (Mark) Bedinghaus of Palmyra, IL and Ladonna F. (Walt) Austin of Virden, IL, sons Tim R. Coleman of Virden, IL, Lenny J. (Annette) Coleman of Auburn, IL, Randy G. (Libby) Coleman of Divernon, IL and Kevin M. Coleman of Farmersville, IL, 21 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, sister Peg (Clifford) Turner of Loami, IL a brother George (Janice) Harris of Virden, IL and several nieces and nephews. Her husband Leonard D. Coleman Jr., grandchildren Jacob Clinton Austin and Randi Coleman, great grandchild Emily Hansen, sisters, Joann Sheets and Marjorie Lewis and brothers, Carl and Earnest Harris, preceded Betty in death.

Marian Jean (Howley) Ramsay, 80 formerly of Virden, IL passed peacefully in Florida after a long illness.

Marian is the daughter of the late Richard and Eleanor Ramsay of Virden, Illinois.

Marian graduated from University of Illinois and taught kindergarten thru third grade. Marian also resided in McMurray, PA and was a pre-school teacher for more than 20 years and then worked as a therapist in Gateway drug and alcohol rehab center.  After retiring Marian moved to Melbourne FL where she was active in her Christian community and member of Trinity Presbyterian Church.  Marian Ramsay loved people, laughing, her family and friends.  She enjoyed reading, painting, craft shows, traveling, dining out, shopping and the beach.

She is survived by her three daughters, Amy Jo Ewart, Joan Patrice Vanell and Nancy Kay Fletcher and one son, Ross Christopher Howley, six grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.

Graveside services were held at 1:00 p.m. Monday February 16, 2015 at Virden Cemetery. Rev. John Huxtable officiating. A private memorial service will be at a later date in Virden, IL. Virden – Lorene (Midge) M. Olive 82 of Virden, IL passed away Saturday, February 14, 2015 at St. John’s Hospital Springfield, IL.

She was born June 14, 1932 in Auburn, Illinois to Carlie and Waneta (Bradley) Van Huss.  She married Fred J. Olive on August 6, 1954.  Midge worked at Franklin Life Insurance Co, Marine Bank and the Virden Recorder retiring in 2005.  She was an EMT on the Virden Ambulance for many years.  She loved spending time with her family especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren, traveling and eagle watching. She was a long time member of Prairie Temple Assembly of God Church.  Midge and Fred celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary August of 2014.

Surviving Midge is her husband Fred, daughters, Sheila (Rick) Goodwin, Cheryl Richardson, Cynthia (Glenn Murphy) Savoy, and Karen Olive.  Grandchildren Tanya (Chris) Reighard, Jeremy (Jenilee) Goodwin, Kara (Damon) Marr, Courtney (Dean) Hixenbaugh, Candace Richardson, Rachael (Marvin Jarman) Savoy, Phillip (Cassy Hasara) Savoy, Kaden and Kaley Olive, Chris McCann, Stacey (Kerry) Kern and Debbie (Chad) Deathridge.  Great Grandchildren Jacob, Matthew, Samantha, Justus and Colben Reighard, Elayna, Annalise and Abigail Goodwin, Hudson and Kinsey Marr, Madison Richardson, Jeremiah and Rhema Hixenbaugh, Devin, Carsen and Brennen McCann, Josie, Parker and Mylie Deathridge. Midge is also survived by her sisters Helen (Tom) Rolando, Geraldine (John) Singer, Eileen Elston and Esther (Aaron) Brewer, her brother Jim (Mary) Van Huss, sisters-in-law Alta Van Huss and Doris Van Huss and brother-in-law Irv Henke.  Preceding in death were her parents, brothers Charles, Tom, Jake and Bob, sisters Hallie Lair and Laurie Henke, son-in-law Jeff Savoy and grandson Jason Goodwin.

Visitation will be Tuesday February 17, 2015 from 4 to 8 pm at Prairie Temple Assembly of God Church Virden, IL with a Celebration of Life Service at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Rev. Terry Turner, Rev. Jeremy Goodwin and Rev. Tanya Reighard officiating. Organist: Shirley Mercer, Pianist, Molly Mauk.
