Kevin L. Hardesty

Springfield – Kevin L. Hardesty, 51 of Springfield, formerly of Riverton, IL, passed away Thursday February 4, 2016 at Capitol Care Center, Springfield, IL.

Kevin was born March 5, 1964 in Bloomington, IL a son of Marvin L. and Judith A. (Coffey) Hardesty. He graduated from Normal Community High School in Normal, IL and attended I.S.U. in Normal, IL. He worked as a consultant for Menu Advertising & Design (M.A.D. Menu). Some of Kevin’s favorite hobbies were Physical Fitness (which he tried to involve everyone in) shopping and selling anything and everything.  He loved a challenge and was always trying new things.

Surviving Kevin is his mother, Judith A. Kutz of Riverton, IL, daughters, Kristine Hardesty of Springfield, IL and Jade Hoover of Buffalo, IL sons, Nicolas Hardesty of Riverton, IL and Jakob Hardesty of Buffalo, IL, half-brothers, Randy Kutz of Riverton, IL, Chad Hardesty of Normal, IL, Neal Hardesty of Colfax, IL and Craig Hardesty of Bloomington, IL, step-mother, Sharon Hardesty of Colfax, IL; Tim & Tina Roegge of CA, formerly of Riverton, IL who were Kevin’s closest friends and partners and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He leaves behind many friends whom he had touched and helped over time.

K-Dog’s favorite saying was, “Don’t poke the bear.”  He was a gentle giant and will be greatly missed.

Cremation rites have been accorded by Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home, Auburn, IL. Graveside burial and balloon release will be at 12:00 Noon, Friday, February 12, 2016 at Roselawn Memorial Park, 1735 South Camp Butler Road, Springfield, IL.  There will be a Celebration of Live Service following the burial at Roselawn at the V.F.W. on Stockyard Road, Springfield, IL.  Anyone who was a part of Kevin’s Life is more than welcome to attend either one or both.

Irene (Bettis) Smith, 98, of Virden, Illinois, died Wednesday February 3, 2016 at Memorial Medical Center, Springfield.

She was born December 30, 1917 in Macoupin County, the daughter of Clarence A. Bettis and Estella J. (Crawford) Bettis.  She married F. Stanley Smith on November 5, 1937 in Greenville, Ohio.  Preceding in death were her parents, her husband Stanley, her daughter Deborah L. (Smith) Harts, and son-in-law Jim Greenslade.

Surviving are two daughters Donna (Smith) Greenslade and Darla (Smith) Follis; a son Darrell S. Smith; son-in-laws Bill Follis and Dennis Harts; two sister-in-laws Joy Smith and Dorothy (Bettis) Wallace; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was a member of the Virden Church of the Brethren; Virden Woman’s Club; The Do More Unit of Macoupin County Association for Home and Community Education; The Palmyra Chapter, # 453, Order of Eastern Star of which she was a Past Matron; and many other organizations throughout the years.

Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday Feb. 7, 2016 at the Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home, Virden, IL, with Eastern Star services at 2:00 p.m. Funeral at 10:30 a.m. on Monday at the funeral home.  The funeral will be officiated by Dennis Harts. Virden-Norma M. Miller, 97, or Virden, IL passed away at 4:00 P.M. Thursday, January 21, 2016 at Sunrise Skilled Nursing and Rehab facility, Virden, IL.

Norma was born August 24, 1918 in Modesto, IL a daughter to Daniel & Fern (Snowden) Reuter.  She married Clyde “Marvin” Miller on August 17, 1940 in Chicago, IL.

Norma formerly worked at the Virden Department Store and was a member of the Modesto Baptist Church, Modesto, IL.  She also loved to camp and travel

Surviving Norma is her son, Ronald B. (Marilyn) Miller of Springfield, IL; daughter, Joyce (David) Sullivan of Chatham, IL; 7 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.  Preceding Norma in death are her parents; husband, Clyde “Marvin” Miller; daughter, Sonja (Tom) Buchanan and brother, Paul Reuter.

Visitation will be from 4:00 – 7:00 P.M. Sunday, January 24, 2016 at the Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home in Virden, IL. Funeral Service will be 2:00 P.M. Girard – Marylyn J. Park, 86 of Girard, IL formerly of Thayer, IL, passed away Friday January 15, 2016 at Pleasant Hill Village in Girard, IL.

Marylyn was born September 10, 1929 to Thomas and Mary (Russell) Davidson. She was a 1947 graduate of Virden High School, a member of the Thayer United Methodist Church and worked for more than 40 years for the Marine Bank in bookkeeping, cash items and securities transactions departments. She married Robert Park Sr. January 25, 1975 in Springfield, IL.

Surviving Marylyn are her step daughters, Sharon Park of Taylorville, IL and Dorothy Park Alton of Springfield, IL, step-sons, Robert (Pat) Park Jr. of Rochester, IL, James (Linda) Park of Mechanicsburg, IL, brother Russell (Nancy) Davidson of Indianapolis, IN, 12 step grandchildren, 20 step great grandchildren, nephews, Tom (Lorri) Davidson of Union Grove, WI, Pete (Kathy) Davidson of Springfield, VA, Jim (Jean) Davidson of Nappanee, IN, and Steve (Wendy) Davidson of Bakersfield, CA.

Preceding in death were her parents, husband, Robert Sr. and step-daughter, Sunshine Elaine Arnold.

James David Traylor

Girard-James David Traylor, age 78, passed away January 13, 2016, in Springfield. David was born September 14, 1937, in Litchfield to Homer C. and Jane (Brockman) Traylor. He was raised in the Girard area. On April 27, 1957, he married Lupe Bermudez at Our Lady of Guada;use Catholic Church in Denver, Colorado. They owned and operated Dave’s Texico filling station, then returned to Girard in 1963 to farm. In addition to farming he had other small businesses, trucked, and worked at the ADGPTV water plant for a few years. They had four children. David was a member of Sacred Heart parish and the Knights of Columbus in Virden. He was retired and enjoyed farming with his son and grandsons and wintering in Florida where he motorcycled with friends.

David was preceded in death by his wife in 2008, his parents, and a nephew. Those left to cherish his memory include his children, Rebecca (Jeff) Peterson of Iowa Falls, Iowa; Homer Tony (Marcia) of Carlinville, and Duston (Karon) and Jason (Melissa) of Girard; sister Judith Allen of Girard, and brother Keith Traylor of Springfield; 13 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; cousin Ed Traylor of Carlinville; and many other extended family members who were very important to him.

Visitation will be from 9:30 A.M. to 11:30 A.M. Springfield – Floyd L. Castleman Jr.  80, of Springfield, formerly of Virden and Auburn, IL passed away Saturday January 9, 2016 at St. Joseph’s Home in Springfield, Il.

Floyd was born January 31, 1935 in Virden, IL a son of Floyd L. Sr. and Oma Pearl (Reynolds) Castleman. He graduated from Virden High School in 1953. He served four years in the Navy as a Yeoman. After discharge from the service, he attended Sangamon State University and was a member of the first graduating class from Sangamon State. Floyd retired from the State of Illinois Comptroller’s Office as an accountant. He attended West Side Christian Church in Springfield, IL, was a member of Masonic Lodge #4 A.F. & A.M. in Springfield, IL and enjoyed fishing, playing pool with his sons and wintered in Florida until his illness made it impossible.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy, sons, F. Michael of Springfield, Stephen R. Castleman of Auburn, brothers, Robert (Delores) Castleman of Danville, IL, William Castleman of Shell Knob, MO and John (Edith) Castleman of Chicago, IL, and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Preceding in death were his parents and a sister Gloria Wilson.

Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday January 14, 2016 at Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home, Virden, IL. Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday January 15, 2016 at the funeral home. Virden – Rosemary E. “Rose” Talkington, 68 of Virden, IL passed away Wednesday January 6, 2016 at Vibra Hospital Springfield, IL.

Rose was born November 27, 1947 in Princeton, IL, a daughter to Merle and Beverly (Ethridge) Purvis. She married Darrell Talkington January 28, 1984 in Virden, IL. Rose was an Avon Representative and formerly ran a Day Care out of her home for many years. She was a member of Remnant Seed Ministries in Virden, IL.

Surviving Rose is her husband, Darrell Talkington of Virden, IL, father Merle Purvis of Princeton, IL, sons, Larry (Carolyn) Langstrom and Lorne K. (Lori) Langstrom both of Virden, IL, Mark L. (Jesse) Bower of Springfield, IL, James W. (Kay) Talkington and Christopher L. Talkington both of Girard, IL, 15 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, brothers, Larry Purvis and Kent (Geri) Purvis both of Princeton, IL, sister Paula (Gerome) Bucaro of Chicago, IL and several nieces and nephews. Preceding in death was her mother Beverly Purvis, and a brother Mark Purvis.
