Kenneth D. Beard

It is with great sadness the family of Kenneth D. Beard, age 79 passed away on December 6 at 8:50PM after a long illness surrounded by his loved ones.

Ken was born March 30, 1938 in Thayer, IL to Samuel & Lilian Beard. He met his loving wife Mary Lou Devos in Auburn, IL. The two of them celebrated 57 years of marriage this last October. Ken was an avid golfer. His all-time passion was watching the world champion Chicago Cubs, Illini football team and the Chicago Bears. Ken had a successful career at H.D. Smith Wholesale Drug Company in Springfield, IL of 40 years as a Pharmaceutical Sales Rep. Ken also served 5 years in the U.S. Army with honors. His pastime pleasures were watching his grandchildren in their sport activities along with fishing. Ken will be lovingly remembered by his wife Mary Lou, daughter Terri and husband Yiorgo of Morton Grove, Illinois and son Donald Beard and wife, Pam of Savoy, Illinois. Ken will also be fondly remembered by his 2 grandchildren, Taylor and Katelyn Beard. Ken was best known by Daddy-O, BaPa, Coach and KB. Ken truly relished his family and friends. Ken is preceded in death by his siblings, Maxine Fabian, Eva Davis, Norma McGary, Rosetta Beard, Jim Beard and Dwight Beard. The celebration of Ken’s life will be held on December 12 at Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home at 614 Cheyenne Drive in Auburn, Illinois with visitation from 10AM-11:30AM, followed by funeral services at 11:30 a.m.at the funeral home. Rev. Charles Kurfman officiating. Pallbearers:  Steve McGary, Yiorgo Nikoletseas, Taylor Beard, Dale Collee, Elvis Tomlin and Diane Garrison with Honorary Pallbearer, Katelyn Beard.  Graveside services will follow at 1:00 p.m. at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield, Illinois. Memorial donations in memory of Ken can be made to your local American Cancer Society.

Virden – Darrell M. Skelton, 86 of Virden, IL, passed away Sunday December 3, 2017 at Sunrise Skilled Nursing and Rehab Virden, IL, surrounded by his loving family.

Darrell was born March 25, 1931 in N. Otter Twp., IL, the son of Melvin and Mabel Skelton. He graduated from Auburn High School in 1949. Darrell was proud of his service in the U.S. Army and serving during the Korean War. On October 29, 1952, he married Kathreen (Kate) Szerknis at the Virden Church of The Brethren. He was a farmer and truck driver until his retirement in 1993.

Darrell is survived by his wife of 65 years, Kate and their four children: Michael (Karen) Skelton of Auburn, IL, Carol Ramm of Springfield, IL, Mary Kay (Lance) Steahly of San Antonio, TX, and James Skelton of Pawnee, IL, 12 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

There will be no services, cremation rites are being accorded by Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home Virden, IL. Memorials may be made to Grand Prairie of the West Public Library, Virden, IL or to the Church of the Brethren, Virden, IL. Burial of ashes will be at a later date. Girard – Jeremy D. Wilson, 33 of Girard, IL, passed away Sunday December 3, 2017 at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

Jeremy was born October 16, 1984 in Litchfield, IL a son of Candy A. (Morgan) Wilson and Donald G. Wilson. He attended Girard High School and worked as a self-employed general laborer. Jeremy married Krystal L. Lomelino September 7, 2010 in Carlinville, IL. To say Jeremy was a motor head was putting it mildly. He liked working with his dad on anything with an engine. He enjoyed fishing and spending time with his mom. Jeremy enjoyed camping, spending time around a campfire with family and friends and building model cars, boats and trucks with his son Dylan.

Surviving Jeremy is his wife Krystal L. Wilson and his son, Dylan A. Murphy both of Girard, IL, his mother, Candy A. Morgan Wilson of Girard, IL, his father, Donald G. Wilson of Nilwood, IL, sisters, Kris D. Castleman of Girard, IL, Tara J. Wilson of Nilwood, IL and Kaydence R. Wilson of Chatham, IL, several Aunts and Uncles and 3 nieces and 2 nephews. Preceding in death was his younger brother, Eric Michael Wilson.

Taylorville – Lloyd C. “Bub” Ersery passed away Wednesday November 22, 2017 surrounded by his loving family at Taylorville Care Center in Taylorville, IL.

Lloyd was born April 20, 1944 in Girard, IL, a son of Everett John and Laura Mae (Lloyd) Ersery. He married Jean Ann Smith June 26, 1982 in Girard, IL. Lloyd retired from the City of Taylorville Maintenance and Street Department after many years.

Surviving Lloyd is his wife, Jean Ann Ersery of Taylorville, IL, sons, Larry and Tommy Ersery both of Gillespie, IL, and Jimmy Ersery of Hillsboro, IL, step-sons, Randy (Earlene) Smith of Girard, IL and Johnny Smith of Rushville, IL, several grandchildren, sisters, Georgie M. Brewer of Girard, IL, Nina M. Pitts, Barbara A. (Paul) Terry and Roberta M. Wolfe all of Virden, IL, brothers, George R. (Cindy) Bolton Jr. of Virden, IL, Dale A. Bolton of Girard, IL and Terry L. (Diana) Bolton of Virden, IL, and several nieces and nephews. Preceding in death were his parents, and brothers, Everett and Darrell Ersery.

Girard – Janet F. Smith, 77, of Girard, IL passed away at 12:14 A.M. Saturday, November 18, 2017 surrounded by her loving family.

Janet was born January 17, 1940 in Taylorville, IL a daughter to Damian and Thelma (May) Donaldson.  She married George “Ed” Smith on July 18, 1959 in Virden, IL.

Janet was a member of St. Patrick’s Church Girard, IL and part of Doc’s Soda Shop Gang.

Surviving Janet are her sons, Gregory E. (Beth) Smith of Girard, IL, Bradley T. Smith of Girard, IL, Anthony C. (Dawn) Smith of Girard, IL; daughter, Christine M. (Brad) Evans of Virden, IL; brother, Tom (Donna) Donaldson of Carlinville, IL; sister, Mary Don (Rick) Frey of Sherman, IL; 9 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.  Preceding Janet in death were her parents, husband, George “Ed” Smith; step-mother, Imogene Donaldson; brothers, Robert and Larry Donaldson.

Visitation will be from 10:00 A.M. until 12:00 Noon on Tuesday, November 21, 2017 at St. Patrick’s Church in Girard, IL.  Funeral Mass will follow at 12:00 Noon. Rev. Virden – Paul Steven “Steve” Norman 61 of Virden, IL passed away Friday November 17, 2017 at his residence.

Steve was born November 22, 1955 in Springfield, IL, a son of Hubert Paul and Ocie Marie (Hawkins) Norman. He graduated from Virden High School in 1973. Steve was a member of the Prairie Temple Assembly of God Church in Virden, IL, and the United Mine Workers Union of America. He retired after 36 years as a coal miner from Freeman United Coal Company and was currently working at Virden Hardware in Virden, IL as a sales associate. He married Kathy J. McGrew-Alden May 29, 2004 in Virden, IL.

Surviving Steve is his wife, Kathy J. Norman of Virden, IL, sons, Shane (Angela) Norman of Virden, IL and Adam (Frankie) Norman of Hillsboro, IL, sister, Theresa Norman of Gosnell, AR, brothers, Richard (Diane) Norman of Carlinville, IL, and William Norman of Springfield, IL, seven grandchildren, Braden, Madalyn and Kenton Norman, Kaitlyn and Bryce McMillen, Blaine and Lincoln Alden, step-daughter, Heather (Rick) McMillen of Auburn, IL, and Shane (Gillian) Alden of Casa Grande, AZ and several nieces and nephews.

Virden – Wayne R. Helmerichs, 78 of Virden, IL, passed away Thursday November 16, 2017 surrounded by his loving family.

Wayne was born July 5, 1939 in Divernon, IL, a son of Herman and Virginia (Skeens) Helmerichs. He graduated from Virden High School, Virden, IL in 1957 and married Dorothy L. Royer August 23, 1959 in Virden, IL. Wayne worked and later managed the A&P Stores in Virden, IL and Springfield, IL. Later he managed the Virden True Value in Virden, IL and retired from AMEREN Electric in the line clearance Department.

Surviving Wayne is his wife, Dorothy L. Helmerichs of Virden, IL, sons, Allen W. Helmerichs of Lake Ozark, MO, and David L. Helmerichs of Virden, IL, grandchildren, Tony (Angie Milligan) Helmerichs, Corey (Corie Ash) Helmerichs, Derek and Kevin Helmerichs and Claire (Jordan) Ray, 3 great grandchildren, brother, Keith (Sandra) Helmerichs of Brunswick, GA, sisters, Gloria Jean Tibbs of Virden, IL, and Janet (Donald) Jennings of Waverly, IL, several nieces and nephews and a sister-in-law, Sandy Helmerichs. Preceding in death were his parents, a sister, Wanda Arnold and a brother, Windle Helmerichs.

Cremation rites have been accorded by Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home, Virden, IL. There will be a Celebration of Life Gathering from 10:00 a.m. to Noon Saturday November 25, 2017 at the Virden Church of the Brethren Virden, IL, with a Celebration of Life Service following at Noon at the church.
