Carlinville – Patrick Matthew Baker, 28 of Carlinville, IL formerly of Virden, IL passed away Sunday October 9, 2016 at his residence.

Patrick was born May 9, 1988 in Springfield, IL a son to Ron W. and Rena M. (Riffey) Baker Sr. He graduated from Virden High School (SASED) in 2006. Patrick was an out-going, fun loving person who was a compassionate champion for those less fortunate than he. He was proud to participate in Carlinville Estates Human Rights Commission and was the “go-to” person for other residents. Patrick loved wrestling, fishing, swimming, movies, breakfast with his family and family gatherings. He loved gaming with his brothers and corresponded with a large group of internet friends. He loved animals, especially the family dog, Pepper.

Patrick is survived by his mother Rena (Bob) Steele of Virden, IL, father, Ron (Chris) Baker Sr. of Hannibal, MO, brothers, Michael (Heather) Baker of Thayer, IL and Ron Baker Jr. of O’Fallon, MO and several Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, Step-brothers and Step-sisters.

Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Thursday October 13, 2016 at Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home Virden, IL. Rev. Mary Alice Cunningham officiating. Virden – Ruth E. Johnson, 80 of Virden, IL passed away Monday October 3, 2016 at her residence surround by her family.

Ruth was born June 20, 1936 in Vincennes, IN, a daughter of Beryl and Harriet (Seals) Pittman. She married Rev. David P. Johnson June 6, 1953 in Shawneetown, IL. Ruth was a minister’s wife for many years and assisted her husband in the churches they served.

Surviving Ruth is her mother, Harriet Pittman of Indianapolis, IN, daughters, Paula Harbaugh of Virden,  IL  and Deborah Moses of Marine, IL, sons, David (Trinna) Johnson of Virden, IL and Billy (Phyllis) Johnson of Clarksville, TN, 24 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren, sister, Faye (Randy) Wood of Indianapolis, IN, brothers, Carl (Marilyn) Pittman of Savanah, GA, James (Joy) Pittman of McCordsville, IN and Roger Pittman of Indianapolis, IN and several nieces and nephews. Preceding in death was her father, Beryl Pitman, husband Rev. David P. Johnson, granddaughter, Elizabeth Bennett and sisters, Luetta Shipley, Judy Land and Velma sue Bough and brother Harold Pittman.

Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to Noon Wednesday October 5, 2016 at Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home Virden, IL with Rev. James McGee, Rev. Larry Mouser and Rev. Trevor Johnson officiating, soloists are, Julie McGee, Tom and Karen Burrell. Honorary Pallbearers are Jeramiah Johnson and Jonathon Johnson . Pallbearers are Billy Johnson Jr., Joshua Johnson, Bruce Hobbs, William Hobbs, Steven Henn, Matt Smith, Travis Johnson and Jacob Johnson. James William Evans

James W. Evans, “Gray Fox”, 90 of Thayer passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, September 28, 2016.

Jim was born June 2nd, 1926 to James and Anna Mae Evans.  He married his high school sweetheart, June Davis, on June 5th, 1948 and she survives.

Father of 10 children.  Five sons:  Mark, Matthew, Taylor (Phyllis), Tim (Patrice), and Tom (Susan); five daughters: Gail (Fred), Judy (Jim), Beth (Bob), Rebecca (Terry), and Sarah (Bob); brother Robert (JoEllen) and sister Dorothy (Mick, deceased).  He has 18 grandchildren and 5 great-grandkids.

He was a member of Thayer United Methodist Church and has attended that church since childhood.

He was a World War II Veteran, serving his country in the Navy during that war in the Southwest Pacific.

Mr. Evans owned and operated Evans Masonry until he retired and his sons carry on the family business.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one son (Matthew), and one Grandson (Luke Gass).

Private graveside services were at 2 p.m. on Sept. 29th.  He was taken from his home to his final resting place at the family cemetery on his farm.  Calvert and Ferry Funeral Home in Virden handled arrangements.  Rev. Jerry Divjak officiating.

Pallbearers were sons, Mark, Taylor, Tim, and Tom; grandsons Clay Gass, Matthew Morgan, Matthew Evans, Luke, Wil and Joseph June; and Cole and Cade Etter.  Honorary pallbearer Michael Morgan (US Navy, stationed on the USS Royal).

Memorials may be made to Thayer United Methodist Church.

Mary Lee Jaggers

Virden-Mary Lee Jaggers, 73, of Virden, IL passed away at 11:00 P.M. Wednesday, September 21, 2016 at her residence in Virden, IL.

Mary was born July 9, 1943 in Scottville, IL a daughter to Ralph Emerson and Cleo Elberta (Champion) Downs.  She married Darrell L. Jaggers October of 1963 in Virden, IL.

Mary was a member of the Pentecostals of Springfield, IL and was very active with church functions.  She loved to watch the Hummingbirds from her window and loved to play games such as Yahtzee and other card and dice games.  Her favorite past time was spending time with her family.

Surviving Mary are her daughters, Kimberli Crays of Virden, IL, Gena (companion, Randall Sanders) Donaldson of Girard, IL; brothers, Bill (Patty) Downs of Yule, FL, Larry (Mary Lou) Downs of Charlotte, NC, Danny (Joquena) Downs of Scottville, IL; sisters, Shirley Kerbovac of Benton, IL, Sandy Hackman of Tomball, TX; 5 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.  Preceding Mary in death were her parents; husband, Darrell Leon Jaggers; brothers, Ralph, Bob, Gene, Gerald & Earl Downs; sisters, Gloria Daech and Anne Madden.

There will be no visitation, cremations rites have been accorded by the Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home in Virden, IL.  A graveside interment of ashes will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday Sept. 26, 2016 at Virden Cemetery, Virden, IL. Virden – Terry Mae Sennings, 53 of Virden, IL passed away Thursday at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, IL.

Terry was born Jan. 21, 1963 at Fort Ord, CA a daughter to Carl A. and Shirley A. (Wyzard) Sennings. Terry was a graduate of Lamphier high School in Springfield, IL.

Surviving Terry is her companion Michael L. Ferrero of Virden, IL, step-daughter Amanda M. Ferrero-Mallicoat of St. Louis, MO, sisters, Amy Lockwood and Jody Sennings both of Springfield, IL, brother, Rick Sennings of Springfield, IL, niece, Brittany Lockwood of Huntsville, TX and a nephew Michael Lockwood of Athens, IL, and several additional nieces and nephews. Preceding in death were her parents.

Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday Sept. 27, 2016 at Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home, Virden, IL with funeral services at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday Sep. 28, 2016 at the funeral home. Rev. John R. Gudgel


Nilwood – John R. Gudgel, 89 of Nilwood, IL passed away Saturday Sept. 17, 2016 at Pleasant Hill Village in Girard, IL.

John was born Jan. 19, 1927 in Athens, IL a son to Andrew and Mary (Faust) Gudgel. He was a U.S. Marine Corp veteran serving as a corporal during WWII. After his service John graduated from Bradley University in Peoria, IL with a degree in Industrial Arts. He married Wilma J. Edge December 20, 1952 in Farmersville, IL. John worked for many years as a shop teacher for the Springfield School District and he was a Principal for Ellsworth, Athens and Petersburg, IL School Districts. John formerly attended Prairie Temple Assembly of God Church in Virden, IL.

John is survived by his wife Wilma J. Gudgel of Nilwood, IL, sons, John R. (Karen) Gudgel II of Nilwood, IL, and James R. (Nina) Gudgel of Sidney, OH, 3 grandchildren, 1 great granddaughter, a brother, Richard (Shirley) Gudgel of Springfield, IL, sister-in-law Barbara Gudgel of Waggoner, IL and several nieces and nephews. Preceding in death were his parents, 3 brothers Tom, Bill and Gene and 4 sisters, Helen, Caroline, Margaret and Dorothy.

Memorial services will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday Sept. 23, 2016 at Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home Girard, IL with visitation one hour prior to services. Chaplain Terry Link officiating. Virden – Rev. Estill O. Lomelino 96 of Virden, IL passed away Wednesday September 14, 2016 at the Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy, IL.

Estill was born April 16, 1920 in North Otter Twp., IL a son to Harvey and Pluma (Monts) Lomelino. He married Ida M. “Babe” Carter May 10, 1941 in St. Charles, MO. Estill was a WW II U.S. Army veteran. Estill worked at the Virden Dress Factory from 1946 to 1958 and later worked for Andy Smith Lumber Co and for Ralph Evans Concrete of Virden, IL.  He was a member of Grace Southern Baptist Church in Virden, IL and the American Legion Post #386 Virden, IL. Estill was a supply minister in the area for many years.

Surviving Estill is his daughter, Sandra Huffines of Virden, IL,  daughter-in-law, Penny Lomelino of Girard, IL, sons, Larry (Leslie) Lomelino of Auburn, IL and Evan (Janet) Lomelino of Viola, IL, several grandchildren and great grandchildren, sister, Marjorie Owens of Springfield, IL, brothers, Melvin “Howard” Lomelino of Girard, IL, Harvey (Barbara) Lomelino of Riverton, IL and Herbert (Kay) Lomelino of Springfield, IL and several nieces and nephews. Preceding in death was his parents, wife, Ida M. “Babe” Lomelino, a son, Mark L. Lomelino, brothers, Harry, Eldon and Harold Lomelino, sisters, Marie Lehnus, Opal Berniece Lomelino and Melva Parker.

Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to Noon Tuesday Sept. 20, 2016 at Grace Southern Baptist Church in Virden, IL with funeral services at Noon at the church. Rev. Jimmy Hammond officiating.
