Virden-Linda Kay Shipp, 60, of Virden, IL passed away at 3:40 P.M. Friday, March 27, 2015 at St. John’s Hospital surrounded by her loving family.

Linda was born April 5, 1954 in Springfield, IL a daughter of Norman E. & Doris B. (Jones) Molen. Linda married Michael Shipp on June 3, 1972 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Girard, IL.

Linda graduated from Virden High School in 1972. Linda was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church of Auburn, IL. She worked at the Foundation for Medical Care for 10 years and then worked for Levi, Ray and Shoup for 15 years.

Linda loved spending time outdoors gardening and tending to all of her flowers. Her greatest joy in life was her granddaughter Kadence. She loved spending time with her, whether it be planting flowers, playing dolls, reading or watching movies. Every moment spent with Kadence was a treasure to Linda.

Surviving Linda is her husband, Michael Shipp of Virden, IL; sons, Terry M. Shipp, Brian S. (Stephany) Shipp both of Virden, IL; brother, Norman E. (Robyn) Shipp of Houston, TX; sister, Kathy A. Donaldson of Virden, IL; granddaughter, Kadence E. Shipp of Virden, IL and several nieces and nephews. Preceding Linda in death are her parents.

Visitation will be from 9:30 – 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, March 31, 2015 at the Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home in Virden, IL for family only with the graveside service for family and close friends starting at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor Martin Kaufmann officiating. Virden-Elmer “John” Smith, 68, of Virden, IL passed away at 9:45 A.M. Wednesday, March 25, 2015 at his residence.

John was born December 20, 1946 in Buckhart, IL, a son of John and Maxine (Denton) Smith. He later married Sharon Hannon on August 18, 1966 in Missouri.

John was a 1965 graduate of Mt. Auburn High School and worked for Schien Equipment. He later worked for the Virden School District where he retired in 2010 with over 34 years of service. John was very proud of his grandchildren and enjoyed attending their numerous sporting events.

Surviving John is his wife, Sharon K. of Virden, IL; daughters, Lori A. (Fred) Mulacek of Girard, IL, Angie D. (Dean) Rodgers of Springfield, IL; sister, Millie Lynch of Selmer, TN; grandchildren, Lauren and Drew Mulacek and several nieces and nephews. Preceding John in death were his parents.

Visitation will be from 4:00 – 7:00 P.M. Sunday, March 29, 2015 at the Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home in Virden, IL. Funeral service will be at 10:00 A.M. Monday, March 30, 2015 also at the funeral home with the Rev. John Huxtable officiating. Pallbearers: Fred Mulacek, Dean Rodgers, Mike Reynolds, Josh Craig, Brian Hannon, Ralph Schwegmann and Raymond Mitchell with Honorary Pallbearers, Lauren Mulacek, Drew Mulacek and Arthur Hannon. Girard-Marcia M. Perry, 62, of Girard, IL passed away at 12:15 P.M. Friday, March 13, 2015 at Friendship Skilled Nursing Home and Rehab Center in Carlinville, IL.

Marcia was born February 9, 1953 in Springfield, IL a daughter to Clarance & Betty “Connie” Constance (Long) Allmon Sr. She later married James E. Perry, her Grade School Sweetheart.

Marcia loved flowers and spent a lot of time in her rose garden. She loved to feed the birds and would spend hours watching them as they flocked to her feeders. Her cats were her children and she loved to play cards. She was a devoted wife and a wonderful homemaker.

Surviving Marcia is her husband, James E. Perry;  a brother, Clarance R. (Lynne) Allmon Jr. of Jacksonville, AR and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. Preceding her in death are her parents.

There will be no visitation or service, cremation rites accorded by the Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home. Girard, IL. Marcia’s wish was to be returned to the spot where she and Jimmy first met and shared their first kiss. Marcia always wanted a little red car. James N. Rodgers

Auburn-James N. Rodgers, 88, of Auburn, IL passed away at 12:30 A.M. Saturday, March 7, 2015 at Memorial Medical Center, Springfield, IL.

James was born on May 28, 1926 in Franklin, IL, a son to William Almer & Henrietta (Seymour) Rodgers. He later married Carolyn Medd on July 23, 1957 in Springfield, IL; she passed away on October 9, 1987.

James joined the U.S. Marine Corps and was a Marine Sharpshooter with the 6th Marine Division. He was severely wounded on April 1, 1945 while participating in the seizure of the Yontan Airfield on Okinawa. He earned the Purple Heart, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal and the WWII Victory Medal. Later he would volunteer his time at the Auburn Cemetery where he helped with mowing and the general up keep. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and a member of the Veterans of Foreign War, Auburn Post #8157.

Surviving James are nieces, Mary Kirgan, Janice Ping Roth, Bonnie Sandidge, Pam Schiermeier, Ella Kay. Shriner, Kathy Rodgers; nephews, Jim Boston, Randy Medd, Bobby Medd and sister-in-law, Jean Rodgers of Yakima, WA. Preceding James in death are his parents, wife, Carolyn (Medd) Rodgers; brothers, William A. Rodgers, George Rodgers and sister, Grace Rodgers.

Visitation will be from 10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, March 11, 2015 at the Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home in Auburn, IL with the funeral service starting immediately following the visitation at 11:00 A.M. with Mr. Bill Woodruff officiating. Girard- Julia R. Walker, 91, passed away at 10:10 A.M. Monday, March 2, 2015 at Pleasant Hill Village in Girard, IL.

Julia was born January 14, 1924 in Springfield, IL a daughter to Joseph & Caroline (Streble) Maier. Julia later married Donald G. Walker on March 13, 1948 in Decatur, IL.

Julia was a member of St. Patrick’s Church, Girard, IL. She worked for the State of Illinois for over 25 years as a clerk in the Department of Transportation.

Surviving Julia are sons, Joseph D. (Sherry) Walker of Lakeview, AR, James E. (Stephanie) Walker of Girard, IL, Stanley F. (Joan) Walker of Coffeen, IL; daughters, Annie Pierson of Virden, IL, Carol Lewis of Girard, IL; 14 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Preceding Julia in death are her husband, Donald Walker; brothers, George and Joseph Maier and sisters, Caroline Maier and Clara Ward.

Virden – Janice L. Tomasko 63 of Virden, IL passed away Saturday February 28, 2015 at St. John’s Hospital Springfield, IL.

Janice was born September 9, 1951 in Springfield, IL a daughter of Earl D. and Wanda B. (Malsbury) Tomasko. She was a 1969 graduate of Virden High School and a member of First Christian Church Virden, IL. Janice attended Illinois College in Jacksonville, IL and formerly worked for over 27 years at DiCarlo’s Restaurant in Virden, IL and at St. John’s Hospital. Janice was a caregiver to her mother for many years. In addition to Janice’s generosity in life, Janice continues her generosity to countless individuals by being an organ donor.

Janice was an avid sports fan and loved the St. Louis Cardinals. She loved being out doors spending time with her nieces and nephews and loved football.

Surviving Janice is her son Joe (companion: Diane Monday) Tomasko of Virden, IL, sisters, Marilyn (Donald) James of Gresham, OR, Jean, Judie and Julia Tomasko and Kellie Austiff all of Virden, IL a brother James (companion: Barb Radtke) Tomasko of Rochester, IL and several nieces, nephews great nieces, great nephews and close family friend, Kyle Heriford. Preceding in death were her parents and brothers Russell and Steven Tomasko; uncle, Dale Tomasko.

A Celebration of Life Gathering will be from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday March 4, 2015 at Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home Virden, IL with funeral service at 8:00 p.m. Rev. John Huxtable officiating. Girard – Richard A. Spellerberg, 96, of Girard, IL, passed away Saturday, February 28, 2015, at Pleasant Hill Village.

Richard was born November 29, 1918, in Chicago, IL a son of Arthur F. & Sibylla B. (Stippich) Spellerberg. He was a WW II veteran serving in the U.S. Army Air Force as a radio mechanic and operator and gunner. He flew 15 combat missions before his plane was shot down in the Black Thursday raids on Schweinfurt, Germany. He was a POW for nineteen months and was awarded a Purple Heart.

Surviving Richard are his sister Mildred Furman of Girard, IL; three nephews, including Stephen (Carolyn) Furman of Girard, IL; and several great nieces and great nephews. Preceding Richard in death are his parents and a sister, Gail Laut.

Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 4, 2015 at Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home, Virden, IL with funeral services at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Keith GeRue officiating.
