Virden-Amelia L. Moore, 92 of Virden, IL passed away on Saturday, April 19, 2014 at 1:34 P.M. at the Villas of Hollybrook Retirement Center in Chatham, IL.

Amelia was born May 10, 1921 in Girard, IL a daughter to Frank and Mary (Oblock) Royce.  Amelia later married Harry M. Moore on August 14, 1943 in Hattiesburg, MS.

Amelia was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Virden, IL.  She also worked at the Ben Franklin Drug Store in Virden, IL and retired in 1989 from Dicky-john in Auburn, IL.

Amelia is survived by sons, William (Betty Ann) Moore of Taylorville, IL, Robert (Diane) Moore of Chatham, IL; daughters, Diane (Mark Napierkowski) Moore of Chicago, IL, Joan (Dan) Doerfler of Forsyth, IL; 10 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.  Preceding Amelia in death are her parents, her husband, Harry M. Moore, 2 brothers and 5 sisters.

There will be no visitation.  Funeral Mass will be Monday, April 21, 2014 at St. Patrick’s Church in Girard, IL with Rev. Willene Kasten

Virden – Willene Kasten 90 of East Peoria, IL formerly of Virden, IL passed away Sunday April 13, 2014 at Riverview Manor Care in East Peoria. Willene was born October 5, 1923 in Bachtown, IL, the only daughter of 6 children born to Alta Mae and William F. Breden. She attended school in Grafton and Jerseyville, IL and graduated from St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing in Alton, IL. She was a cadet nurse in the Army Corp of Nurses and received additional post graduate training in Milwaukee, WI.

Willene married John S. Kasten of Carlinville, IL September 17, 1949 where they resided in Virden for 60 years. They were members of Sacred Heart Church.

Early in marriage, Willene worked at St. John’s Hospital and later retired from Virden School District where she was school nurse for 26 years. Over her lifetime she did private duty with many friends and relatives, and often was called upon to provide advice for illness and injury. Willene also had a wonderful singing voice and sang for weddings of several nieces, nephews, and Sacred Heart Church parishioners.

She is survived by one daughter, Mary Ann Randle (Charles) of East Peoria, IL and one son, Jeffrey Kasten (Claudia) of Deerfield, IL; six grandchildren, Marisa Randle and Brian Randle (Stacia) of Chicago; Katie, Chris, Nick, and Lizzie Kasten of Deerfield, IL; great grandson Noah Randle; sister-in laws Mary Alice and Joanne Breden; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband John; infant son John Lynn; and brothers Harold, Ralph, Norman, Ken, and Laverne Breden.

Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Sunday April 20, 2014 at Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home, Virden, IL with a prayer service at 4:00 p.m. Additional visitation will be from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. Monday April 21, 2014 with funeral mass at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, Virden, IL. Monsignor Thomas Holinga officiating. Pallbearers:  Brian Randle, Chris Kasten, Nick Kasten, Fred Gass, Jim Gass, Gerry Odell, Ken Breden & Bill Breden with Honorary Pallbearers, Phil Breden, Mark Breden and Greg Breden.  Burial will be in Virden Cemetery. Virden – George T. “Tom” “Tucker” Neal 68 of Virden, IL formerly of New City, IL (Pawnee, IL) passed away Monday April 14, 2014 at his residence.

Tom was born May 25, 1945 in New City, IL (Pawnee, IL), IL a son of John Wesley and Edna L. “Mandy” (Hunt) Neal. He married Mary L. “Vene” Duff October 22, 1965 in Rochester. Tom was a laborer working out of Laborers local # 477 in Springfield, IL. He had formerly worked at Staab Battery in Springfield, IL. and as a farmer.  Tom was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved camping

Tom is survived by his wife Mary  “Vene” Neal of Virden, IL daughters, Angela M. (Tim) Williamson of Virden, IL and Dawn L. (Brian) Parker of Glenford, OH; 6 grandchildren, Matt (Joslyn) Williamson, Johnathan, Katy and Wyatt Williamson, Delaney and Kade Parker; sisters, Marie (Freeman) Smallwood of Virden, IL, Della  (Ron) Graham of Bulpit, IL and several nieces and nephews. Preceding Tom in death were his parents, brothers Wesley “Amos” and John Neal and his sister Helen Kovalichuk.

Visitation will be from 10:00 until Noon Saturday, April 19, 2014 at Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home Virden, IL with funeral services starting at Noon at the funeral home with Rev. Tim Barbee officiating. Pawnee – Bernard Lee Gall 75 of Pawnee, IL formerly of Thayer, IL passed away Friday April 11, 2014 at the Veterans Medical Center, Indianapolis, IN.

Bernard was born June 16, 1938 in Thayer, IL a son to Albert and Hannah (Evans) Gall Sr. He was a 1957 graduate of Virden High school and was a U.S. Navy veteran serving from 1957 to 1961. He married Mary Lynne Gazda September 19, 1959 in Virden, IL. Bernard worked as a catastrophe insurance adjuster for many years. He was a avid fisherman and Cardinal Baseball fan.

Surviving Bernard is his wife Mary Lynne Gall, a son Mark Gall, sisters Evelyn (Harold) Smith and Delores Allen all of Pawnee, IL, and several nieces and nephews. Preceding Bernard in death were his parents and brothers Albert Gall Jr. and Bill Gall.

There will be no visitation. Cremation rites accorded by Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home, Auburn, IL. Graveside service will be at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday April 22, 2014 at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield, IL. Deacon Denny Baker officiating. Girard – Rev. Randol L. Mercer 86, of Girard, IL passed away Monday March 17, 2014 at his home after a brief bout with cancer.

Randol was born December 21, 1927 in Granite City, IL, the son of Carl and Vineta Mercer. Randol married Shirley Weiderman August 20, 1949 in Battle Creek, Michigan. Pastor Mercer preached his first sermon in 1946 as a teenager, and after one year in the U.S. Army attended Bible College, graduating from Central Bible College in Springfield, Missouri in 1953. He served pastorates in Kenosha, WI, Edwardsville, IL, Brighton, IL and twenty years at Prairie Temple Assembly of God in Virden, IL.  He was active in youth and Sunday school ministries as well as the Maryville Children’s Home and nursing home building and administration for the Illinois District of The Assemblies of God. Pastor Mercer served in various promotional and development capacities in the building of Lake Williamson Christian Center in Carlinville, IL, the headquarters for the Illinois Assemblies of God. The Mercers produced and hosted several years of live local radio broadcasts while in Virden, IL.

Randol is survived by his wife Shirley Mercer of Girard, IL, a daughter Dawn DeLee (Jim) Cherry of Girard, IL, sisters, Vineta (Bill) Smallie and Faye Mercer both of Granite City, IL, a brother, Glen (Etta Rae) Mercer of Edwardsville, IL, grandsons, Tony (Erin) Mercer of Palos Heights, IL, Jeff (Lyndsey) Cherry of Springfield, MO, and Andy (Melissa) Cherry of Edwardsville, IL, a granddaughter Jill Cherry of Girard, IL, three great-grandchildren, Owen Jeffrey and Winnie Harper Cherry and Martin John Mercer and many nieces and nephews. Preceding in death were Randol’s parents, a son Martin Randol Mercer and four sisters and two brothers.

Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday March 20, 2014 at Prairie Temple Assembly of God Virden, IL and one hour prior to services which will start at 10:30 A.M. Friday March 21, 2014 at the church. Rev. Terry Turner and Rev. Dick Whitworth officiating. Musicians will be David and Marcia Gerard. Pallbearers are Jim Cherry, Tony Mercer, Jeff Cherry, Andy Cherry, Dale Bruce and Mike Ellis. Honorary Pallbearers are Bart Mercer, Ron Simpson, Irv Henke, John Fenelon,Don Garbett and Terry Turner ll. Waverly – Colleen Rose Pierce, 56, of Waverly, IL passed away Friday March 7, 2014 at Memorial Medical Center, Springfield, IL.

Colleen Rose was born August 29, 1957 in Lansing, MI a daughter to Richard and Betty (Hause) Allen. She married Arvin L. Pierce December 8, 1996 in Girard, IL. Colleen Rose was a loving, supportive wife and mother and partnered with her husband Arvin at ACBees Apiaries as beekeepers since 2003.  She was a sincere believer in Jesus Christ.  She loved animals, gardening, camping, walks in the woods with her family, and she formerly worked as a manager for Casey’s General Store in Auburn and Waverly, IL.

Surviving Colleen Rose is her husband Arvin L. Pierce of Waverly, IL, daughters, Amanda Hughes of Pawnee, IL, Lea (Jacob) Baugher of Springfield, MO, Betty Stanger of Lowder, IL and Lila (Ben) Clinton of Jacksonville, IL, sons, Richard Hughes of Auburn, IL, Jon Hughes of Springfield, IL, Scott Fowler of Lowder and Asher Pierce of Virden, IL, 15 grandchildren, her mother, Betty (Ken) Allen-Gearhart of Waverly, IL sisters, Cathy (Gary) Gray of Hallsville, MO, Connie (Ken) Forren and Carol (Russ) Turner both of Chatham, IL, Candee (Mike) Carman of Shreveport, LA and Chris Allen of Springfield, IL and several nieces and nephews. Preceding in death was her son, Aden Pierce and her father, Richard Allen.

Virden – William R. “Bill” Hart, 83 of Virden, IL passed away Monday March 3, 2014 at Sunrise Nursing Home, Virden, IL.

Bill was born December 17, 1930 in Virden, IL a son to Walter Lee and Lillian (Gaines) Hart. He graduated from Virden High School in 1948 and married Marjorie E. Knox June 6, 1949 in Girard, IL.  Bill owned and operated William R. Hart Construction Co. for many years, worked as a coal miner at Freemen Crown III and retired from the State of IL Dept. of Revenue. He was a 50 year member of the Virden Masonic Lodge # 161 A.F. & A.M., a former sexton and board member for the Pleasant Hill Cemetery. He was a member of the Virden Church of the Brethren, Virden, IL.

Surviving Bill is his wife Marjorie E. Hart of Virden, IL daughters, Carol Sue (Eric) Peters of Hardy, AR, Linda A. Bryant of Chatham, IL and Mary Ellen Hart of Virden, IL, a son William Bruce Hart of Springfield, IL, brothers, Leonard B. Hart of Loami, IL and Robert E. Hart of Riverton, IL, grandchildren, Bethany L. (Marc) Sattovia of Ballwin, MO, Thomas Peters of Hardy, AR, Keaton A. Peters of Auburn and Jared R. (Mandy) Bryant of Divide, CO and a great grandchild Camden Sattovia of Ballwin, MO, and several nieces and nephews. Preceding in death were his parents and a brother Walter Hart.

There will be a Masonic Service starting at 10:00 A.M. prior to the visitation which will be from 10:30 a.m. to service time at 11:30 a.m. Thursday March 6, 2014 at Virden Church of the Brethren, Virden, IL. Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home, Virden, IL, will accord cremation rites following services with burial of ashes at a later date in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Virden, IL. Rev. David Barnett officiating.
