Betty L. Mullen

Auburn– Betty L. Mullen, 96, of Auburn, IL passed away at 8:38 P.M. Wednesday, February 20, 2019 at Auburn Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Auburn, IL.

Betty was born September 9, 1922 in Virden, IL a daughter of Ralph and Edith Viola (Lester) Thompson.  She was a graduate of Virden High School, class of 1941 and married Dale T. Mullen on July 5, 1941 in St. Charles, MO.

Betty was a member of the First Baptist Church, Virden, IL, and prior to that she was a member of Cherry Hill Baptist Church in Springfield, IL where she taught Sunday School for 20 years. She worked for Sears in Springfield, IL for 20 years in various departments and eventually was the manager of the electrical and lamp Department.  She was a member and past President of the Sears Retiree’s Club and the Virden Senior Citizens, and a member of AARP. On Valentine’s Day 2018 the State Journal Register ran a cover story about Betty and Dale’s love story. Some of her favorite pastimes were dancing with Dale and in their earlier days enjoyed roller skating.

Surviving Betty is her husband of 77 years, Dale T. Mullen of Auburn, IL, daughter Karen (Brian) Browning of Springfield, IL, son, Dale “Tom” (Pam) Mullen of Auburn, IL; 4 grandchildren, twins, Kyle and Matthew Browning, Rachel (Matt) Shonhart and Kenneth (Hillary) Browning, 7 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.  Preceding Betty in death were her parents, daughters, Caroline and Jo Ann Mullen; brothers, Warren and Robert Thompson and 2 infants, Eugene and Francis Thompson and a sister, Helen Johnson.

Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Sunday February 24, 2019 at Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home, Virden, IL.  Funeral Service will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday February 25, 2019 at the funeral home with Rev. John Parrish officiating. Pallbearers: Mike Hawkins, Matt Shonhart,  Kenneth Browning, Kyler Phillips, Curtis Claycomb and Bill Ferry.  Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, Virden, IL. or to the Hope Institute for Children and Families, Springfield, IL.  Interment will be in the Virden Cemetery, Virden, IL.  To leave a comment for the family, please visit, www: calvert-ferryfuneralhomes.com
