Virden – Sandra “Sandy” K. Huffines, 72, of Virden, IL, passed away Thursday September 26, 2019 at Memorial Medical Center Springfield, IL, surrounded by her loving family.

Sandy was born November 16, 1946 in Springfield, IL, a daughter of Rev. Estill O. and Ida “Babe” M. (Carter) Lomelino. She married Orville L. Huffines August 25, 1965 in Oregon, IL. Sandy was a member of Grace Southern Baptist Church in Virden, IL and formerly worked as a demonstration person at Sam’s Club in Springfield, IL, and at R. & R. Bindery in Girard, IL.

Sandy is survived by her daughters, Terri M. (Paul) Stecker of Virden, IL, Dawn M. (David) Huffines -Medley of Greenview, IL, and Shawn M. “Melissa” (Timothy) Pierson of Girard, IL, a son, John L. (fiancé: Sarah Kidder) Huffines of Virden, IL, 18 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren, brothers, Larry E. (Leslie) Lomelino of Auburn, IL, and Evan A. (Janet) Lomelino of Viola, IL and several nieces and nephews. Preceding in death were her parents, Rev. Estill O.  and Ida “Babe” M. Lomelino, husband, Orville L. Huffines; brother, Mark Lomelino and a great grandson, Robert J. Fugate Jr.

Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to Noon Saturday, October 5, 2019 at Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home Virden, IL, with funeral services to follow at Noon at the funeral home with Rev. Carlinville – John W. Smith 88, of Carlinville, IL formerly of Virden, IL, passed away Friday September 20, 2019 at Heritage Manor in Carlinville, IL.

John was born May 22, 1931 in Virden, IL, a son of William H. and Lizzie (Smith) Smith. He married Betty L. Morehead December 23, 1949 in Girard, IL. John was a U.S. Army veteran serving during the Korean War. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Virden, IL, and the American Legion Post #386 in Virden, IL. He owned and operated Smith Remodeling retiring in 1998.

John is survived by his daughter, Brenda M. (David Gatschenburger) Smith of Mountain Grove, MO, and a son, Bradley E. (Sandy) Smith of Carlinville, IL, 4 grandchildren, Robert M. and Aaron Smith, Gregory and Lindsey Butler, 6 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Preceding in death were his parents, his wife of 69 years, Betty L . Smith, sisters, Delores Enrietto and Mildred F. Struckely.

Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Saturday September 28, 2019 at Calvert & Ferry Funeral home in Virden, IL, with funeral services to follow at 11:00 a.m. Rev. Virden – Sue Ann Langley, 75 of Virden, IL, passed away Tuesday September 17, 2019 surrounded by her loving family at Heritage Health in Springfield, IL.

Sue was born October 19, 1943 in Springfield, IL, a daughter of William D. and Nellie C. (Galbraith) Nerone. She was a 1961 graduate of Virden High School Virden, IL and a member of the First Baptist Church in Virden, IL. Sue retired after 35 years with the Illinois State Police as an accountant with fleet management and 6 years in management at the State Police Academy. She later worked 12 years  as a teller for Farmers and Merchants State Bank and Prairie State Bank and Trust in Virden, IL. She was a member of the O.E.S. Chapter # 453 where she was Past Worthy Matron and a member of the Nile Abeba Temple # 42. Sue married Cole Langley June 16, 1990 in Virden, IL.

Sue is survived by her husband, Cole Langley of Virden, IL, a daughter, Donna K. (John) Black of Lewisville, TX, brother, William (Carole) Nerone of Springfield, IL, and several nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews. Preceding in death were her parents, a brother, Jim Nerone and a sister, Donna Nerone Dean.

There will be an Order of Eastern Star Service at 10:00 a.m. Saturday September 21, 2019 at Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home in Virden, IL. Visitation will be from 10:30 to 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home with a funeral service at 1:30 p.m. Dr. Joseph Eby officiating, Pianists / soloist will be Rev. Chuck Kurfman.  Cremation rites to follow services with a 10:00 a.m. family graveside of ashes Tuesday September 24, 2019 at Virden Cemetery. Charles O. Scharfenberg

Virden – Charles O. Scharfenberg, 95, of Virden, IL passed away at 11:20 P.M. Monday, September 9, 2019 at Sunrise Skilled Nursing and Rehab Virden, IL, with his loving family at his side.

Charles was born on August 5, 1924 in Greenfield, IL a son to Christian Carl and Minnie Marie (Erp) Scharfenberg.  He married Margaret Pratt on  October 26, 1943 and went to work in a factory in Litchfield, IL making parts for aircraft during WW II.

Charles was a member of the Virden Church of the Brethren.  He also worked as a salesman for T & T Tire of Virden, IL, worked at the Thomasville Elevator for 5 years, worked for Marshall Schutt Trucking and worked for Dickey-john in Auburn, IL as a Inventory Control Manager retiring after thirteen years of service.  He farmed in the Girard and Medora area for over 27 years.  His favorite hobbies included working in his yard, in his garden and he loved wood working.  He enjoyed the outdoors and spending time with his family and friends was foremost.

Surviving Charles is his wife, Verna J. Scharfenberg; sons, Gary Scharfenberg of Franklin, IN, Dan (Annette) Scharfenberg of Girard, IL, several grandchildren, great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.  Preceding Charles in death are his parents, first wife, Margaret Pratt Scharfenberg; brothers, Adam, Albert, Clarence and Lester Scharfenberg and sisters, Rose Stults and Louise McCarty.

Kathreen R. “Kate” Skelton

Kathreen R. Skelton

Virden – Kathreen (Kate) R. Skelton, 87 of Virden, IL, died Sunday, September 1, 2019 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, IL. Kate was born July 22, 1932 in Auburn. She was the daughter of Joseph and Anna Szerknis. She graduated from Auburn High School in 1950.

She married Darrell Skelton, October 29, 1952 at the Virden Church of the Brethren. She farmed and worked alongside her husband until they retired in 1993. Kate was an active member of the Church of The Brethren in Virden and spent many years singing in the choir. Her favorite hobbies were singing, sewing, reading and cooking for family and friends.

Surviving are her four children, Michael (Karen) Skelton of Auburn, Carol Ramm of Virden, Mary Kay (Lance) Steahly of Milliken, Colorado, and James Skelton of Pawnee; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren, 1 sister, Joanna Miller of Mesa, Arizona and 1 uncle, Charles Urban of Wilmington, Illinois.

Kate is preceded in death by her husband, Darrell and sister, Mary Helen Potter.

Cremation rites were accorded by Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home, Virden, with no services planned and burial of ashes at a later date.
